Can't get HP laserjet 1020 to work

Asked by zaf

Hi
I just got an HP-LaserJet 1020 and I thought it would work with hplip but as far as I can tell, it installs alright but doesn't print anything if I try the print test page function. I am using Ubuntu Gutsy. I tried the hplip 2.7.10 run script and the tar ball without success. Is there something to be done in particular ? I noticed an hp-firware utility but when I launch it it finds the printer and then just freezes. I can't even kill it.
I would really appreciate it if I could run that printer as I have no desire to change it for another one.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide me.

Did you use hp-setup to install the printer? It is required for this device.

yes I did. I ran the hplip-2.7.10.run script with the setup tool. It detects
the printer and installs it but then nothing happens. If I try to print a
test page it doesn't. I now have the printer icon in my tray saying that it
doesn't have any paper in it.
what am I doing wrong ?

Please run hp-check -t and post the output.

Also go to http://localhost:631/printers and make sure the printer is 'started'. Sometimes if the printer is in an error state cups will stop the queue. Also try rebooting the printer and clearing the queues and start again.

Please run:

tail -f /var/log/messages

Also try power cycling the printer and restart cups?

To restart cups: sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

Also run this script:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript

and post the output. Did you install hplip or using what came pre-installed?

Will try this tonight. I installed hplip2.7.10 that I found on the web site
(the hplip2.7.20.run script).
Thanks a lot

I have confirmed that the a LaserJet 1020 works using hplip 2.7.10 on Ubuntu gutsy. So it -should- work. You could try uninstalling and re-installing. perhaps something is amiss.

If not let me know and we'll troubleshoot it more.

If you go into the hplip source and run make uninstall it should uninstall hplip. You can then run

rm -rf /usr/share/hplip

to be sure everything else is removed. just use caution in doing that.

ok so i did that, relaunched the hplip script and I got a firware download
dialog but it doesn't seem to be doing much (the cancel button isn't even
displayed just a grey rectangle leading me to believe there should be a
cancel button there). I may have crashed it the first time around. I'll wait
to see if it does anything. Is it supposed to be long ? after I launched it
my printer blinked and then made a noise and now nothing is happening.
I'll keep you update.

by the way before it started that downloading firmware dialog it asked if I
wanted to download or if i had the firware update file. Anyone knows where I
could find that file ? Maybe the download is crashing or something but if I
can get my hands on the file it could be a different story.
Thanks for all the help and time.

ALRIGHT it works !
turns out that firmware dialog was still displayed (as waiting, as if it had
crashed and was non responsive) but you could click next on the install
dialog under it (probably a bug). So i did and the test page came out !
Thank you everyone for helping me out.

Great. I'm going to try and reproduce the dialog problem, I just saw that myself.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP!
