HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z can print but fails to scan

Asked by Joshua Klein

I'm running ubuntu 11.10 and HPLIP 3.12.2

I'm able to print from my printer just fine but I cannot scan from it. Every time I attempt to scan using "Simple Scan" I get the error "Failed to Scan Unable to start scan"

Here is the output of hpcheck -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi,

We'are unable to reproduce this issue. Please do the followings.

- Exit hp-systray, if it is running.
- Run in terminal 'system-config-printer' and delete all the print queues.
- Run in teminal 'hp-setup' and configure the printer.
- Once setup is done, you can scan using 'xsane' or 'hp-scan'.

Thanks.

I contacted HP support. I believe the scanning functionality is physically broken, ie, it is a hardware problem with the machine.
