HPLIP on SLES 11 SP1

Asked by adamkuo

Dear Sirs,
I am a newbie on Linux and I must take the SLES for our system.
If any one can help me on install the latest HPLIP 3.11.12 on SLES 11 SP1.
Even the SLES 11 SP1 has the HPLIP installed on it (3.9.8), the install wizard still told me I missed 6 required depensy,
All documents I could find are related to OpenSuse 11.3/11.4 and did not work for me.
Please help any share any commend if you have successfully installed the HPLIP on SLES 11 SP1.

It would be appreciated if you can tell me step by step and how to install the miss Dependencies.

Best Regards
Adam KUO

Hi,

As Suse has stopped given support for 11.0 to 11.2, but gives active support for 11.3 and 11.4 versions, you can download the dependencies from the suse repo itself. However for older version of distro, you need to manually search and download the packages.

For installation in Suse, please refer http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/novell.html

If there are some optional dependencies missing in hp-check, you can still use the hplip driver.

Thanks

Sarbeswar Meher,

what are you talking here about "support for 11.0 to 11.2"
and "download the dependencies from the suse repo"
when the user has Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1?

Of course SLES 11 SP1 is supported by SUSE - provided
the customer has an official support contract for your
his Suse Linux Enterprise version.

Adam KUO,

Why do you need the latest HPLIP 3.11.12 on SLES 11 SP1?

Which exact program is "the install wizard" that told you that
you "missed 6 required depensy"?

It is a bug which exists "since ever" in HPLIP that their tools
untruly report missing dependencies.

FYI:

The latest HPLIP 3.11.12 release as ready-made RPMs for
various openSUSE and Suse Linux Enterprise versions
is also available via the "Printing" project in the openSUSE
build service for 32-bit i586 and 64-bit x86_64 architecture.

E.g. from this direct URL:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Printing/SLE_11_SP1/
as packages "hplip", "hplip-hpijs", and "hplip-sane".

Carefully read
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer
and
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing

In particular if you have an official support contract for your
Suse Linux Enterprise version, verify via the official contact
for your particular support contract whether or not
a version upgrade to HPLIP 3.11.12 may cause issues
regarding your support contract.

Can you help with this problem?
