Do I *need* HPIJS for a postscript 2605dn?

Asked by Bill Moseley

Sorry for the basic question, but I have a new 2605dn which supports postscript. What I'm not clear on is if there's a reason to use HPIJS on this printer. This will be used in a network environment -- connected via ethernet and using CUPS as a print server.

The faq at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/faqs.html states:

"HPIJS is a subcomponent of HPLIP. HPIJS provides basic printing support for non-postscript printers."

So, is there any benefit to use this?

If I install HPIJS does it still send postscript to the printer?

Does it offer better print quality over just using the PPD supplied on the CD?

Thanks,

Strickly speaking, no. All you really need is the appropriate PPD file.
HPLIP comes with the PPD file you need, or you can obtain it on
openprinting.org:

http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

There are a couple of tools in HPLIP that might be useful, but overall there
is not a huge benefit to using HPLIP with a Postscript printer.
