Printer not found under openSuse 12.1

Asked by Vasilis Serghi

I have installed HPLIP from the repos in openSuse 12.1, but my printer is not recognised over wireless. I have version 3.11.10 installed. On my previous version of openSuse (11.4), it found my printer and worked flawlessly using the setup wizard via the one-time USB connection for wireless printing. I have successfully pinged my printer. and my printer works ok when connected via USB but can't be found through wireless. I have also tried the version from this website assuming of course that the differences between 11.4 and 12.1 were minimal as far as HPLIP was concerned. I have, as far as I know, added the ports 161, 162 and 9100 for TCP and UDP in my distro firewall.

Here is the output of snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 ip.address.of.printer 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0

Srikanth,
I do not understand what you mean.
The reporter has "installed HPLIP from the repos in openSuse".
What is missing in HPLIP 3.11.10 for openSUSE 12.1 when a user
installs our ready-made RPMs that we provide with openSUSE?

Hi Vasilis,

Follow the below steps and check if you can detect the printer this way.

Considering that your computer and the printer are over wireless network and you have the IP address of the printer available from the printer control panel or from the configuration page of the printer.

-Run "hp-setup -g"
-Click on the second option Network/Ethernet/Wireless.
-Click on the "Show Advance Options"
-Check on the "Manual Discovery"
-Enter the IP address of the printer and proceed to Next.

Let me know if your printer gets detected this way via wireless. Post us the complete terminal debug output of the "hp-setup -g" command.

Thanks,
Goutam Kodu

error: Printer queue setup failed. Could not connect to CUPS Server Is user added to "sys" group(s)

Using the manual method and supplying the IP address worked. It found the printer and installed it but I needed to do this via root in order for the printer to install properly. But when I did, it worked fine after that at normal user level. It now prints via wireless.

I do have a question though, I did not need to add myself to "lp" or "sys" groups in order to do this on openSuse 11.4, it worked first time. Is this a problem with support for 12.1?

FYI:

This "user added to 'sys' group" or similar messages in HPLIP
applies only for locally connected devices and is mostly misleading
and was never true for openSUSE and can never ever have applied
for devices which are connected via network (as in your case).

Some basic information how access permission is granted
for USB devices which should be directly used by end-users in openSUSE
(I assume in other Linux distributions it works basically the same nowadays):

For printers and all-in-one devices (i.e. printer + scanner)
the group of the USB device file must be "lp" so that the CUPS usb backend
which runs as user "lp" (who is member of the group "lp") can send
printing data to the printer unit (i.e. the printer interface of the USB device).
It is sufficiently secure and reasonable easy to use by default
the same group "lp" for printers and scanners because both kind of devices
usually require physical user access (to get the printed paper or
to place a paper on the scanner) so that both kind of devices
should usually require the same kind of security.

The owner and permissions of device files is nowadays set by udev and
udev is controlled by 'rules' files e.g. for HPLIP in openSUSE it is basically
/etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules
which contains entries like (long line wrapped here):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Check for AiO products (0x03f0xx11).
ATTR{idVendor}=="03f0", ATTR{idProduct}=="??11", OWNER="root", GROUP="lp",
 MODE="0664", ENV{sane_hpaio}="yes", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ENV{sane_hpaio}="yes", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes" stuff
(actually this is somewhat duplicate - only one should also work
but to be on the safe side and backward compatible I have both)
trigges in the udev magic a script which grants additionally to
the traditional OWNER="root", GROUP="lp", MODE="0664"
settings an ACL (access control list) which contains the one
normal user who is currently logged in directly at the computer.

This way the one normal user who is currently logged in directly
at the computer additionally gets read and write access via the ACL
to the USB device file so that this user can e.g. scan a document
on his USB all-in-one device.

In contrast for devices which are connected via network
neither the traditional OWNER="root", GROUP="lp", MODE="0664"
settings nor ACLs make any sense because thers is no device file
for devices which are connected via network.

Access control for devices which are connected via network
would have to happen inside the device (e.g. via whatever kind
of network package filtering / firewall software) so that the
network device itself could reject access from certain networks
or hosts in the network.

Although I can now find my printer via the IP address and access it via wireless, i'm still convinced that there is a problem with openSuse 12.1 and the latest release, as 11.4 worked with no issues first time. I don't recall being a member of lp group. I'll wait and test the next release when it comes out.

Anyway, thanks for the help, much appreciated. I am happy again.
