New Printer; HPLIP thinks ethernet is connected, is not!

Asked by Jerry

A new 6500 plus with wireless, attempted to install, was able to connect to router, but HPLIP thinks an ethernet cable is connected, preventing wireless to work. There is no ethernet cable connected. Did a factory setting default on the printer, retried HPILP install, but still exists. What the heck?

Hi Jerry,

In order to make HPLIP work, internet connection is needed while installing HPLIP, because it needs to download some dependencies from the repositery. As I see there are some dependencies missing. I will suggest you to download and install HPLIP 3.11.10 from hplip website.

Thanks,
Sanjay

I did download 3.11.07 with an internet connection. I don't know any other way to do it. I have now downloaded 3.11.10, and I am having some problems with that also. I will post later.

I attempted to download 3.11.10, and received the following :

There was a problem opening the file /home/herry/download/hplip-3.11.10.run

The file you opend has some invalid characters. If you continue editing this file you could corrupt this document. You can choose another character encoding and try again. Current locale (UTF-8).

I attempted to re-download this file without success. I am not able to open 3.11.10.

I am about to return to Windows Vista. This has been a harrowing experience. The download of hplip is missing files, that needs to be fixed!!!! Fast!!!

Then follow on screen instructions

I did all of that, downloaded, run, did all the instructions, and the driver still thinks there is an ethernet cable installed between the printer and the computer. Cannot connect between the computer and the printer wireless.

It is a shame, I love linux, but I must have a printer. If you don't have a solution tomorrow, I go back to windows. I am ashamed that HP does not support this operating system better. I think Bill Hewlett and David Packard would roll over in their graves if they knew the support was this bad.

Sorry to say.

I performed the above steps. I have sent 3 print jobs to the printer. None of them printed. The printer shows as enabled and shared. The three print jobs are in the printer queue and their status is "held".

Amarnath Chitumalla (amarnath-chitumalla) said :

Please check if other print queue was set as default printer.

1) run "system-config-printer" from terminal and remove unused print queues.

2) set wireless printer as default printer.

Please run "hp-check -t" again in terminal and post output here.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi Jerry,

Please delete all the printer queues in "system-config-printer" and do the re-setup of the printer now with the command "hp-setup -g" in terminal and follow the same steps provided in comment #11.

The command "hp-setup -g" will display a lot of debug messages in terminal . Please capture those debug messages and post it here.

Thanks,

A new input as of 1815 hours PST! In the last few days, several CUPS updates were received and installed. I had not attempted to print before running hp-setup -g as instructed in comment #17. I ran that in terminal and posted the results here. I then did some discovery work at my end, and found two printers installed:

Officejet-6500-E710nz-2 This printer did not print!

and

Officejet_6500_E710n-z This printer prints!

I am now in the print business, but have no idea why!! Can someone explain to me??

I thank all involved in my problem for helping me! Thank you very much! If I can do any more, perhaps to help solve any mystery, please let me know! In a day of printing, I will come back here and "Problem Solved"!

OK All, my printing problem is resolved! I have been able to print all documents that I have attempted. I am able to print using CTL-P, using google docs print, g mail print, and libre docs print.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this, my life is much more relaxed now!!

Blessings to you all.

Jerry
