cannot detect usb connected printer
I installed HPLIP from the Synaptec Pkg Mgr in Ubuntu 10.04; after entering "sudo hp-setup" and my password I attempt to connect via Wireless/802.11 and cannot access the device via USB:

Other notes: I can use the printer with Sys > Admin > Printing to print only. Everything works fine in Vista 32-bit on both USB and wireless connections when it feels like booting properly.

Okay, done. I encountered the same recursion that caused me to attempt to use the package from Synaptec in the first place. When I attempt to set up the wireless/802.11 in lieu of the USB connection, I select "finish" from the 5th screen after the printer connects to the network and I am directed back to the initial screen where I am prompted to select from USB, local, or wireless networking. Output below:
:~/Downloads$ hp-check -t
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.10)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi Colin,
The IP address which the printer is showing should be previded by the wireless router. Are you sure you configured printer with wireless router correctly?? If yes then please check if you are able to ping this IP from the Linux system.
Also please paste the output of following command here.
hp-setup -g <IP address of the printer>
Thanks,
Sanjay

Printing has never been an issue; Ubuntu's native drivers allowed me to print without installing anything, but the printer requires the HP drivers to save scanned documents. I can't scan documents - that's why I installed the HPLIP software in the first place.
The scan option is not available in the HP Device Manager and selecting "Scan > Scan Color > Scan To" on the printer returns the error message "No Scan Options".

From the above log, it seems you have configured printer on net. For scan, run "hp-scan" or "xsane" in commandline.
As you're saying, for Officejet_

Okay, the scan was effective. My only two remaining questions are as follows:
1) How do I define the destination folder for the scanned image?
2) How do I select between a .png or .pdf as the file type and b/w or color? It prompts you to choose these options when the operation is performed at the printer console in Windows.
The results of my successful scan are below:
colin@Mr:~$ hp-scan

Hi Colin,
By running "xsane" command in terminal, you will get pop-up to select options.
hp-scan is only command line. for option, you can check "hp-scan -h"
e.g.
hp-scan --file=
Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath
