hplip-3.11.10 ubuntu 11.10 print is blurry

Asked by Lars Kristensen

Dear Launchpad

I just installed hplip-3.11.10 on ubuntu 11.10 with gnome shell. The printer is a HP laserjet CP1025 color. When i print, all black text and numbers appear very blurry with shadow edges and the layer of ink used is very thick, so thick that you can easily feel it with your finger. It actually peels off some places. The same applies when i print the printer test page. This was not an issue when i used hplip-3.11.7 on linux mint 11. Is there anything to do about this problem? Please help, i use this computer for work.

Kind regards

Lars Kristensen

Hi,

Thanks for the log. To help us understand and analyze the issue please do the following.

1) run "hp-toolbox -g" command in the terminal and then
   a)Remove all the print queues if present, on pressing the minus (-) button. And then re-add the printer using Plus (+) button.

=> Please do the following to capture some logs.

    a)Open /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in root mode and replace

        LogLevel warn

          with

       LogLevel debug
       hpLogLevel 15

    b) Open Terminal and run following commands:
       => su
       => /etc/init.d/cups restart
                  or
       => service cups restart
       => cd /tmp
       => rm *.out
       => rm *.bmp
       => hp-check -t > /tmp/hpcheck.log

    c) Try to print the file and then send
          => /var/log/syslog (if present),
          => /var/log/messages (if present),
          => /var/log/cups/error_log
          => /tmp/*.bmp
          => /tmp/*.out
          => /tmp/hpcheck.log
          => document used for printing

For attaching the logs please create a bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+filebug
 and then attach the logs, because you wont be able to attach them here.

Hi Lars,

To analyze the problem, can you provide some more log files . Below are the steps to provide the same,

Please follow the below steps to provide the same

1.Open the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf in write permissions.
$sudo gedit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
 Change LogLevel warn to LogLevel debug and below that line add hpLogLevel 15.

2. Restart the cups
$sudu /etc/init.d/cups restart

3. Empty the cups error_log file and syslog file

sudo cat /dev/null > /var/log/syslog
sudo cat /dev/null > /var/log/cups/error_log

4. Print a test page.

5.Attach us the /var/log/syslog and /var/log/cups/error_log file.

6. In /tmp folder you will find files with name starting with hpcups like, hpcupsfilterc_1.bmp, hpcupsfilterk_1. bmp, hpcups_jobX.out.

Can you please attach these files too.

(Please attach the files with one archive)

(In questions there is no option to upload the attachments)
Click on the link below it will ask you "summary of the bug" then click next, at the bottom you will see "No i want to report a new bug". click on that and then again at the bottom you will find "extra options" click on that finally at the end you will see a place to upload your attachements.

I posted a bug report for my cp1025nw here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/889306

Sound like the same problem. However I am using gentoo
and have not been able to get it working correctly under
linux yet.

i think i have a similar issue.
my printer is the Brother dcp-9010CN

when printing direct from a website all text is blurry.
when printing from a pdf text is blurry

but when printing from gedit everything looks fine.
i thought it was an font problem.
but i've already installed all fonts (including msfonts)

This is happening to me too. Oneiric / hplip 3.11.10. Printing a PDF from Okular get fuzzy text .. if I print in colour mode. If I print in greyscale mode everything looks clean and crisp (and in the right amount of black toner).
Printer is HP CP1025nw - brand new (and so far very disappointing). Have upgraded printer firmware to latest.

For anyone with a cp1025nw, as a work around I used the cups backend at
<http://www.g-loaded.eu/2006/12/03/pdf2email-cups-backend/>
to use with eprint. The script needs minor alteration to print to the eprint
address instead as the user running it. A little hassle till the bug is fixed.

Hope this helps someone.

This also affects me with my brand new CP1025, on Ubuntu 11.10 ...
Feel free to ask me if you need some log or conf files.

i've partially solved my problem.

it turns out that the pdf's i was printing were made in ms office 2010.
but when saving you have an option to save as iso pdf.
that option was not enabled.

so apparently Ubuntu can't print (it looks fine on screen) an non iso pdf.
