printer mounting hp-smart Windows Installer after restart. Can't print anymore

Asked by Jean-Yves

Hi there,

I got an HP LaserJet MFP 1132 all-in-one printer. I installed hplip 3.10.11 just fine from the website. The only thing, which I think could be related to my problem, is that it didn't find the printer automatically on USB, I had to provide the Bus:Device Ids to get hp-setup to find it.
After that it installed fine and I could give some print jobs, but on restart the printer can't be found. A "lsusb" command can see it, but after about a minute the system just mount the Windows auto-installer as a CD-ROM (udf mount type) and I can't print anymore. I tried hp-toolbox, but couldn't get a workaround for that problem. If I uninstall everything and restart the install process, it comes back again, until the next printer boot...

If anyone could help me on this I would greatly appreciate.

Hi JY,

You need to disable the smart install feature on this device. To do this need to have a windows machine.

Steps to Disable Smart Install feature:
1. Connect the device using USB to a windows machine
2. Go to Utilities directory.
3. Run Smart Install.ext to Disable the Smart Install feature
4. Now try connecting to Linux machine. It should work fine. Please let me know if you need more help on this.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

Thank you very much guys!

Srikanth your solution seems to work well!

I'm still puzzled at how bad HP is dealing with this, forcing you to disable a useless piece of software they put directly in the printer. They don't provide the USB cable but make sure to get you into trouble. Makes me think of Norton on Vista that you had to uninstall via an unisntaller you had to download first...

Anyway thanks again, you sure saved my day, I had been stuck on this for couple of days...

  cheers

Oh, by the way, the software SUtilities is on the install CD provided with the printer.
