Cannot connect HP 6500 E710n via wireless (adhoc)

Asked by r-verma

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 (32 bit) on a Dell Latitude 6420 and trying to connect to a HP 6500 E710n using wireless.

I am running HP LIP 3.11.7. I can connect using usb connector.

On the HP Device Manage:

1. If I click on Actions-> Wireless/wifi setup using USB (Printer is already configured on usb ), I get the error :
An I/O error occurred.
Please check the USB connection to your printer and try again.
(Device I/O error)

2. If I click on Device-> Setup Device... I go through 'Wireless Configuration'; 'Select from Discovered Wireless Capable devices' (which lists my printer which is connected on usb); 'Find and Select a wireless network' - here the SSID of the printer is not displayed, even though I can see the SSID on my network manager.

Any clues on how I set up the printer so that I can use it on wireless (without using my office wireless LAN)

Thanks!

Hi Rahul,

To setup wireless connection, please follow below steps:-
1) run "hp-toolbox" or "system-config-printer" commands in terminal.
2) remove all Printers Queues.
3) run hp-setup again and select Wireless option. follow navigation.

if above solution didn't work. please follow below steps.
1) get the Wireless IP address from printer UI panel
2) run hp-setup, select "Network/Ethernet/Wireless network" option
3) enter Wireless IP address in "Manual Discovery" of "show Advanced Options"
4) follow navigation.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath

Hi Amarnath,

Thanks for your input, but unfortunately, this still does not work! In the first option I still cannot see the SSID of the printer in my list of available networks. In the second option, the printer is not showing any IP address as it is not connected to the network.

Before we go on, one question: What I am trying to do is use the printer _without_ using any existing network (wired or wireless). The idea is to use this in the ad hoc mode. Is this at all possible?

Thanks,
Rahul

Hi Rahul,

Thanks for query.
currently HPLIP supports to connect existing networks (i.e. Wired or wireless). where as ad-hoc mode (or peer-to-peer) is not supported.

Thanks & Regards,
Amarnath
