cannot complete hp-setup as 'next' button greyed out

This is a question and answer in one...

I recently posted this message in the hplip help mailing list, but didn't get a reply:

"I can't complete hp-setup because the 'Next' button in the 'Enter Printer
Information' dialogue box is greyed out.

The field 'Printer Name' is auto-completed, I add names for the fields
'Location' and 'Description', all the fax related fields are greyed out
because there's no fax facility, but the 'Next' button remains unavailable.

Clean install : Ubuntu (7.10), HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver.
2.7.10)"

The solution is to clear the 'Printer Name' field and re-type a new name. The 'Next' button reappears.
