HP LaserJet 5P has more printing options with hpijs than with hplip

Asked by mkkot

Firstly, on site http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/laser.html you have information, that LaserJet 5P is connected to computer by USB. It is a bug, 5P has parallel connexion.

Second thing, my problem. I used Linux distro KateOS 3.2, configured my printer with localhost:631 and all worked just fine. After some time developers released new version of distribution, 3.6, which uses hplip for HP printers support, previous version used hpijs. And on KateOS 3.6 printer is normally detected, it works, but in KDE's printing dialog I have less amount of options and functions.

Here you can see what I'm talking about:
KateOS 3.2
http://kateos.org/bugs/file_download.php?file_id=13&type=bug
KateOS 3.6
http://kateos.org/bugs/file_download.php?file_id=14&type=bug

As you asked on your site, here is hp-check -t:
http://pastebin.com/f77134f6a

Thanks in advance

On your hp-check there is an error:

#
Checking for dependency ppdev - Parallel port support kernel module....
#
warning: NOT FOUND! This is an OPTIONAL dependency. Some HPLIP functionality may not function properly.

It seems that perhaps the ppdev module isn't loading. You could try running;

modprobe ppdev

and then try setting up the printer.

Hope this helps.

Sorry--and then configure the printer using hp-setup and use the hp-toolbox to change the printer settings.

Thanks for fast answer.
I did:
blueice mk {~} $ su
Password:
blueice root {/home/mk} # modprobe ppdev
blueice root {/home/mk} # hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.7.6)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 4.5
error: No devices found. Please make sure your printer is properly connected and powered-on.
Done.
blueice root {/home/mk} # hp-toolbox

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.7.6)
HP Device Manager ver. 10.0

And the same error here, it doesn't see my printer. But as far as I remember, hp-setup has always problem with that, however I have no objection about printing on 3.2 with hpijs.

Okay--try disconnecting and reconnecting the printer. And then run:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
and post the output.

direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

ran from root.

Can you run hp-check again? I want to make sure ppdev is still loaded.

Sorry for delay I was in hospital for some time.

Is ppdev loaded? Here you are:

blueice root {/home/mk} # modprobe -r ppdev
blueice root {/home/mk} # /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"
blueice root {/home/mk} # modprobe ppdev
blueice root {/home/mk} # /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

Yes, it was planned. Thanks for asking.

But I would like ask few things, according to my first post in this thread:

1. Why you're trying so hard to make HP Device Manager working? It wasn't work in 3.2 and I had all options avaible in printing dialog. I even don't use this app.

2. Maybe in hplip comparing to hpijs there is something wrong with ppd file for my printer?

3. Will you fix informations in http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/laser.html or should I report this somewhere else?

Greetings

Sorry I was mistaken on the goal. I understand that you are getting different settings between hpijs and hplip, however hplip uses hpijs.

2. Maybe in hplip comparing to hpijs there is something wrong with ppd file for my printer?

hplip uses hpijs.

3. Will you fix informations in http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/laser.html or should I report this somewhere else?

Yes, this should be fixed in either the next release or release thereafter.

We haven't tested hplip on KateOS so I can't really advise on how well it will work. However it should work--in theory. Looking at your hp-check the printer is not configured to use the hp: backend

"# Installed in HPLIP?: No, not using the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend.
# Device URI: parallel:/dev/lp0 "

This means that you wont be getting the correct feature set. The problem seems to be at this point that the printer is being detected as "unknown" printer from the hp backend. Which means that the hp backend wont be configured correctly.

The first goal would be to make sure the hp backend is seeing the printer. I'm guessing that this is a permissions problem. Because KateOS is based on slackware you may want to search the hplip mailing listing as other users have reported getting hplip to work on slackware but it's rather a bit of a process and we don't support it.

You could start here: http://search.gmane.org/?query=slackware&author=&group=gmane.comp.printing.hplip.user&sort=relevance&DEFAULTOP=and&xP=Zhplip&xFILTERS=Gcomp.printing.hplip.user---A

Sorry I couldn't help more!

Thanks for the link.

I found reading
 http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/Applications_GUI_Multimedia/Configuring_HPLIP_for_Slackware_10_2

that I have /etc/rc.d/rc.hplip file, which had no rights to execute. So I added the rights (chmod +x) and now when starting the system I have:

* Starting hpiod daemon. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[ !! ]
* Starting hpssd daemon. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[ OK ]
* Starting Cups sheduler . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[ OK ]

I looked out in /var/log/* for any help with this hpiod but haven't found. I looked in /etc too (searching for text in files with Konqueror) and I found only /etc/rc.d/rc.hplip.

Where can I find any logs with this error? What might be wrong?
BTW Kate is using SystemV init scripts.

Well in theory /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog should have information about why it's not starting.

Honestly I'm not sure if I can give you much better info. The Configuring HPLIP guide for slackware looks pretty good but I haven't gone through it.

In the future (soon) I'll be going through slackware and several other distros that I should know better, and I'll be making guides for these distros.

You may want to also try the latest version of hplip as the backend has changed since 2.7.6 and you may have better luck.
