debian testing hplip.run

Asked by Carcass

Simple: I canno't install hplip-2.7.10.run on my debian testing (lenny)

I use hp Deskject 6940

It work fine but on repository hplip are old (seems to me 1.6.10) so I leave to install it by run; but when I choice my OS only preference for me is to select Debian stable so .run canno't install on my distro because non password accepted (this is the second step of the run and the choice to do is 5 - but this is related to OS Debian stable).

If I choice another OS not listed by .run tell me that I haven't all dependencies but if I install it is the same bored story: my root password isn't accepted in all way.

I use also this official howto http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/manual/distros/debian.html but nothing ...........

What I can do to update my hplip to the last version on my testing? what I need to have on my system so .run go ok??

Thanks. Carcass

Carcass,

The automatic installer isn't compatible with debian lenny as of yet so you'll want to use the manual install process for installing hplip. Although the manual install instructions are not fully updated for debian lenny either they should start as a good guiding point.

I'll be working on getting the automatic installer working for lenny in the next release.

 At what step did you have a problem with the manual install?

manual installation have problems at this point

apt-get install gcc-c++ python-dev libsnmp5-dev libcupsys2-dev python-qt3 sane-dev libusb-dev libjpeg62-dev cupsys cupsys-client cupsys-bsd libsane libsane-dev python-imaging

more than one dependencies are different on repo or not exist or have another name............

search all dependencies is a real problem.

I am not a nubbies but anyway is hard for me.........

the best solution is probably make .run better for all debian version (also because on apt hplip package is too old for a best use at this moment on debian SID repo we have 1.6.10 hplip....this is not good, anyway......)

I have a very good printer but this a deprecated situation.........I hope in good news from you.

Thanks a lot. Carcass

Well the problem is that all of the distros change package names for the dependencies at some point in the release process so making a single install procedure isn't possible because I can't predict the future name of a package.

Please keep in mind that lenny isn't support by HPLIP yet and has not been tested. However if you want to try it in theory the follow command should install the dependencies,

apt-get install gcc g++ python-dev libsnmp-dev libcupsys2-dev python-qt3 libsane-dev libusb-dev libjpeg62-dev cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsys-client libsane libsane-dev python-imaging

I've verified the lenny package names, however I haven't tested it. Although I can't promise any ETA I'll work on getting support for the next release, however it may not be for several releases.

Hope this helps!

Your welcome. Let me know how it goes. Just keep in mind that Debian Lenny isn't supported, but it should work--in theory. I'll work on getting the installer updated but it may be a release or two before that happens.
