PPD file not found for Deskjet 1050 J410

Asked by David Grant

On running hp-setup on Fedora 15 64 bit no PPD file is found:

/warning: No PPD found for model deskjet_1050_j410_series using new algorithm. Trying old algorithm...
error: No PPD found for model deskjet_1050_j410 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model deskjet_1050_j410_series

hp-check shows the following:
Summary: No errors or warnings.
although on looking at the output this was found:
Current contents of '~/.hplip/hplip.conf' file:
error: Could not access file: No such file or directory

Browsing through the directories of .ppd files did not show any ppd file which seemed to be for the deskjet 1050.

This system is dual-boot and the driver works correctly on Windows XP 32 bit.

I have initially tried using the yum version of hplip and later when this did not work installed hplip using the automatic installer from the hplipopensource site with the same result. The libsane-hpaio.x86_64 rpm is installed through yum. I have used "setenforce 0" prior to running hp-setup again with the same result. I note that the contents of /usr/share/ppd/HP show no deskjet ppds only laserjet, business-inkjet designjet and a few others, similarly for /usr/share/cups/model /usr/share/cups/model/HP and /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/HP although /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/HP does contain the file HP_DesignJet_1050C_PS3.ppd.gz the closest looking file I can find although I have not tried this since I think it is likely not the correct one.

Hi,

For HP Deskjet 1050 J410 the minimum HPLIP version required is 3.10.6 and for Fedora 15 support, HPLIP-3.1.7 release is required. If your machine has lower hplip version please update to 3.11.7.

And don't use HP_DesignJet_1050C_PS3.ppd as these two devices are totally different.

Could you please paste the result of command 'hp-check -t' here?

Thanks and Regards
Ani Balakrishnan

I tried initially with the yum repository hplip which was version 3.11.5. However when this did not work I installed version 3.11.7 using hplip-3.11.7.run

Output of hp-check -t:

[root@localhost ~]# hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.11.7)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

Apologies. I have just discovered the reason for the failure: the CUPS service was not running. After starting CUPS "chkconfig cups on" and "/etc/init.d/cups start" as root, the printer was detected and installed automatically by Fedora. I ran hp-setup to see if it would find the ppd file and it found the following drv:///hp/hpcups.drv/hp-deskjet_1050_j410_series.ppd. I did not complete the hp-setup since as it is now working I don't want to mess with it:) Incidentally the ppd file has still not been copied to /usr/share/cups/model/HP but I did find it in the hplip-3.11.7/ppd/hpcups directory created in the same directory that hplip-3.11.7.run is run from although as it turned out I didn't need this. Thanks for responding to my question.
