Adjusting Printer Margins for Deskjet D4160

Asked by Patrick McCarty

I am using HPLIP 2.7.10 and am running Arch Linux (fully updated). My printer is the Deskjet D4160.

I have been attempting to adjust my printer margins so that they are "correct"; the printed margins in documents, text files, etc. do not agree with the margins I specify within applications (for example, in Page Setup, or something similar).

I will provide one example. When I print the CUPS test page, here are the measurements as reported in the "Imageable Area" box (and the corresponding ruler markings):

Page Size: 8.0x10.38in
                203.2x263.5mm

Lower-Left: 0.25x0.5in
                6.4x12.7mm

Upper-Right: 8.25x10.88in
                  209.6x276.2mm

Resolution: 600x600dpi
                23562x23562dpm

I measured the printed output (in millimeters, to get more precise values), and here are those values:

Page Size: 203.5x262.9mm
Lower-Left: 6.0x8.1mm
Upper-Right: 209.5x271.0mm

In other words, the left and bottom margins are too small, and the top and right margins are too large. I can reproduce this problem in Arch Linux (my currently installed distro), and in Ubuntu 7.04, which I just recently removed from my system.

Oops, I forgot to ask questions:

Is this problem related to CUPS, HPLIP, Ghostscript, a combination, or another application entirely?

Is this a known issue with other printers?

Should I submit a bug report instead?

Thanks.

Hey Patrick,

Lets leave this here for now. I'm getting more information although I may not have much until tomorrow. I'm checking with the engineer that works in this area on what he thinks.

Thanks!

Hi Aaron,

Has this issue been able to be reproduced? On Ubuntu, for instance? Thanks for your support.

If you print the hplip test page what are the dimensions listed?

Sorry for the delay.

The HPLIP test page reports exactly the same dimensions as the CUPS test page does.

The dimensions of the printed output are also the same as with the CUPS test page.

Thanks.

Patrick,

I can reproduce this. I'm working with the engineer that works on the pdd files and he's going to have a look at it.

Sorry for the delay.

Leaving as needing information so i doesn't get lost in the queue.
