Lost print ability after accidental update
Migrating User Issue - jhosszu
-------
cups-1.
I'm unsure whether this is a CUPS problem or an hplip problem. My HP
Photosmart C7150 was printing nicely from two boxes and a laptop, on
socket:
and all was still well.
About 5 days ago this box lost the ability to print. It may have been caused
by an accidental update of hplip to 2.7.7. I noticed around that time, too,
that I had lost the printer driver 7150, with only 7100 being offered. I
have removed that version of hplip and returned to the original version,
hplip-1.
the same as on the laptop which still prints. I have the correct printer
driver back, as well. Unfortunately, even after a complete restart, I still
see every job reported by localhost:631/jobs as 'stopped'.
Is it possible that something in the CUPS setup has been damaged?
The two boxes that still print do not have hplip installed. Is that
significant?
If I catch it on the kde print manager I can see 'error' reported there. Does
that give any clue to the location of the problem?

Good Day Anne
Jumping from hplip 1.6.12 to 2.7.7 is a big jump. Its probably a
permissions issue with how hplip handles usb devices.
You have a couple options at this point. You can keep 2.7.7 or update to
2.7.9. If you can update I would recommend that as the permission
changes in 2.7.9 are more user friends compared to 2.7.7. If you want to
keep 2.7.7 then please just post back
$ hp-check -t
and we'll see where your system is at.
Thanks

I wouldn't have made such a jump intentionally. I managed to uninstall it and
go back to 1.6.12, which had worked perfectly before.
BTW, this is a networked JetDirect printer.

I missed that your printer was connect via network. Permissions in the
sense of 2.7.7 or 2.7.9 don't apply anymore.
Which version of hplip are you running now. Now I'm confused.

I think Mandriva often add patches to the existing package, rather than do a
full new package. At least, that's how I understand it.

I did that, when I installed it before. It put everything in the Download directory. Is that really the best place, or should I move the file to /opt/?

I went through without any errors, IIRC, so it should do again. I'll do the actual instal in the morning, though. Working late in the evening seems to make me have too many PEBCAKs :-)

It's the Photosmart C7180 All-in-One.
I'll report back in the morning. These time-zones are a nuisance :-)

The install ran without any error messages. I can now scan. Unfortunately I still can't print. All jobs show up in localhost:631 as 'stopped'.
Attempting to print a scanned image from Gimp shows the correct printer recognised, but I get the message
lp: The printer or class was not found
What next? Thanks

Correction -
I can print from kmail.
I cannot print from Gimp - error message as above.
From Gwenview the file was created and sent to CUPS. It appeared as 'processing' and disappeared. When I checked complete jobs it said it had been cancelled.

I have been attempting to gather information. This is what I've discovered so far;
Although printing from kmail succeeded once, now all jobs are reported as 'stopped'
Test page from localhost:631 succeeds
Test page from kprinter:
Photosmart_C7100 "/usr/lib/
Test page from hplip fails
Printerdrake says it uses GhostScript + hpijs (recommended) whereas hplip says foomatic + hpijs
Manually set up printer on another box (working) shows Device:
socket:
Queue set up by hplip shows Device:
hp:net/
Reset printer in Gimp - pointing to printer queue C7100 (set up by hplip) - succeeds
service hplip status
hpiod (pid 2279) is running...
hpssd is stopped #Is this correct?
I hope this gives some much-needed pointers :-)

Too late :-) I had just removed it. It's currently re-running the .run install, since that seemed OK, according to the hp-check.

I'm going to do a re-boot. as re-starting the printer hasn't brought up the UI. I'll check then whether hpiod is running. chkconfig doesn't show it as a controlled process.

OK - is it safe to leave the one used by the remote box, or will that not be needed once we have this right?

I don't know what has gone wrong now. I've tried twice, removing everything with the uninstall commands then re-installing from the run file. Both times the UI hasn't registered in the menu, and both times 'service hplip status'
tells me that it can't find hplip.
I'll do nothing more until you've had time to think about this. Maybe it's time to try the .tar.gz, but I'll wait for your comments.

That should have returned that hplip is running. However, it didn't. It said 'Cannot find hplip service'. It appears that it can't find /etc/init.d/hplip - which doesn't exist.

You may have to ignore a good slice of the log. I tried using the kde tool to add a printer, so that I could experiment with it, without jeopardising the hplip-installed one. I wondered about the fact that Gimp prints, using the ghostview printer driver, and tried to install one using Gutenberg. It didn't work, so I removed it.
Sorry if that makes it harder for you. I hadn't seen this message when I did that.

That's OK. It's important to track this down. If it's a bug in hplip or an incompatibility with Mandriva it must be found. It's inconvenient for me, but for the moment I can print from the laptop.

This *is* the one set up by hplip :-) Look at the attached. There is only the hplip printer and fax, and the queue set up on my husband's box - the url is off-screen, but that indicates that it is on 192.168.0.30. I only have the one printer setup on this box.

I'm out of my depth (but more than happy to help) so can you explain the difference between this and printing from the Gimp? From what I see on screen the Gimp is using Ghostscript, and it prints. There must be a difference, but I don't understand it.

I'll experiment and see what's possible. The other two boxes, laptop and workstation, both use socket printing, with the 7150 foomatic/hpijs driver.
I tried setting up, with the cups interface, a printer with the same definition, socket + foomatic/hpijs driver. The cups test page 'stopped'.

The toolbox would be nice, but I've lived without it for the last 5+ years.
The LCD display warns me when ink is low, and I normally scan from the Gimp.
I can't think of anything where the toolbox would be essential.

I hate being beaten, so bug-hunting is a good occupation :-) As long as the show isn't stopped, I'll carry on. If I only had this box I wouldn't be able to, but since I have others, I'll do whatever is necessary.
Do let me know if/when I can do anything else to help. And thanks for your time and patience, too.
I won't post a closing message on the thread yet. I'd like to give something useful, for the archives.

Update -
I removed
cups-1.
cups-common-
cups-drivers-
gutenprint-
libcups2-
task-printing-
then re-installed them. Removed the print queues from localhost:631. Cleaned out hplip and re-installed. Ran hp-setup.
I'm back to exactly the same place. The two queues (printer and fax C7100) are setup, but the test page stalls.
I've tried a cups install of a new printer, setting it to the socket:
It doesn't look as though a corrupted cups was the problem.

John - this is the view from the laptop. The top one is the hplip-installed queue. The bottom one is the old one that still prints. On the hplip one, is the Device ipp what you expect?

It occurs to me that I never told you that I have a duplexer installed. So -
Removed duplexer
Re-started printer
Removed printer-queues from localhost:631 Re-ran hp-setup Test page stalled
Conclusion, probably not significant.

Remember that hplip is not installed on the laptop - the queue is the one setup from this workstation. From here, the queue shows the correct address.
I tried changing the configuration to your suggestion, but it made no difference. The job (from the laptop using the hplip-setup-queue) stalled.
The same job printed correctly from the socket address.

John, in ~/.hplip/hplip.conf I see the following lines -
[commands]
fax = hp-sendfax -d %FAX_URI%
cpy = hp-makecopies -d %DEVICE_URI%
scan = xsane -V %SANE_URI%
prnt = hp-print -p%PRINTER%
Should there not be a space after '-p'?
I did try it, but I wasn't sure what I needed to re-start to test it properly.
As it was, it made no difference.

I tried to safe an email as a pdf, and got this message:

execution failed with message:

The printing problems did start just after these fonts were installed. It may be coincidence, but.....

I deleted the font (shift-del), then ran 'fc-cache -f'. Konqueror thinks it's gone. I re-started cups. Still, attempting to save to a pdf has 'CRIT:

No :-) On the 28th September I wrote to Mandriva Expert list "Yesterday I used the Mandriva font installer to add a few fonts from the Linux Format OOo Special disk. Since then I've had problems with printing."
so I've been searching for info around that time. I can find nothing installed or updated on the 27th (though I may be looking in the wrong place). rpm -qa --last shows kdegraphics-
Attached is the only log that I can find that is relevant, and I can't spot anything there. The entries on the 29th show my attempt to get hplip working again, I presume.
Anywhere else I should look?

It's in the same room, though some distance away. I could run a temporary trailing lead, though. What changes would have to be made to setup? I presume that the wireless link will have to be disabled?
I'm out this evening, but should be back for an hour or more before bedtime, so I'd like to get done as much as we can before the weekend :-)

That's fine. I just didn't want to think that you were waiting for the logs and thinking that I'd lost interest.
It's a side-issue, really, but you'll be interested to know that the main workstation that can't print to the C7180, but can scan in Gimp, can also print from Gimp. This laptop, that prints most things via socket, can't print correctly from Gimp. It prints the top third of the image then ejects
the paper. I wouldn't have expected it to scan, as there is no hplip on
here, but I did expect printing from Gimp if the other printing works :-) All very odd!

A short summary:
The MFP in question is a Photosmart C7180, attached by wifi to the family LAN at address 192.168.0.3. Accessing it are two workstations and one laptop. The main workstation has the latest version of hplip installed. At one point I removed CUPS and re-installed it, in case there was corruption there.
When first set up every feature worked perfectly from the main workstation. A few weeks later I suddenly found that I could no longer print from the workstation. I then discovered that I could both scan and print from GIMP, but nowhere else.
The second workstation and the laptop were set up to print with socket:

Hey Anne,
After looking for what's been going on I think what we may want to do is completely remove hplip and cups again. Also do an updatedb and locate hplip and remove any hplip directories/files you find. Running 'rm -rf /usr/share/hplip' should take care of the lot of it. And then reinstall cups and hplip. It really seems like there is a version conflict with what mandriva installed and what was manually installed. If possible also use urpmi to remove hplip completely as well and hopefully this will resolve the conflict. I'm pretty sure that should move us towards working again.
Hope this helps!

From Anne,
Hi, Aaron. Just updating you. I think that we can say that all issues are
now resolved.
The GIMP was apparently trying to send to a stale printer queue. I checked
the driver settings, Photosmart 7150, and set the queue to the one we created
last night. Printing now works.
I've also checked scanning under the GIMP, and that too is working.
Changing status to resolved.

Thanks for the response. I shan't need to now. I've been away for the

appears to be well now.
