/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed

1. I am running one of the Ubuntu-Lucid derivatives.
2. I installed hplip directly from the repos (through Synaptic) - got version 3.10.2.
3. Plugged in my printer HP Color Laser Jet 1600.
4. Went to Printing setup to add a new printer. It was then discovered and installed automatically.
5. Tried a test page - nothing!
6. Went to the printer queue, the job is just hanging around there. In the properties it says job-printer-state-message: /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed
7. Googling was no help.

I have a second computer that runs a different Ubuntu-Lucid AMD64 derivative. On that machine I did not even have to add the printer, it worked automagically.

TIA for any suggestions on how to get this to work.

I was hoping there would be answer other than: compile it from source. The problem machine is actually a friend's machine, who would not be able to follow those instructions.
I am not ignoring you. :) I will be at the computer in about 3 weeks, and will definitely post back.

OK, following the guide:

The build and install seem to have completed successfully. Now I have to reboot ... how windows-like. :p

After reboot, I get the HP logo in the system tray. Poped up the HP device manager, noticed the "Install Required Plugin". Did that, rebooted just in case.

Tried a test page. The device manager told me it sent the job to the printer, and a few seconds later it told me that the print was successful.
Unfortunately, nothing actually came out of the printer.

Going to the Document Print Status that comes with the OS - not the HP one - I see my job in there as Status = Stopped. When I View the attributes, I see the same /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed.

Please check the ppd file present in /etc/cups/ppd/ folder. Search for "cupsFilter" and put the content of it. It should have "foomatic-rip-hplip". If it is not present, then proper ppd file is not selected while installing. Please attach the ppd file .

Download the latest hplip-3.11.5 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html. Install it and try printing. Please attach ppd file present in /etc/cups/ppd/ folder. Run hp-check and put the output as well.

OK, so something is definitely not right. "foomatic-rip-hplip" does not appear in any file in that directory.
I followed all the instructions that actually worked - not all the instructions were good - at the link above, see my earlier post. And I ended up with hplip 3.11.5. do I install the same one again? That seems rather pointless.
Also, I have no idea how to attach files in here, so I am going to tray and copy-paste the contents of my .ppd in the next comment - don't know if I am going to be able to do the whole thing in one post.

Hello,

  The problem is that it is still using ppd file of 3.10.2 version. You haven't installed the latest hplip-3.11.5 version. Please follow the instructions below.

 1) Connect the printer HP Color Laser Jet 1600 (make it ON) to the machine via USB. Remove any existing print queue present (Go to System -> Administration -> Printing).
 2) Run "hp-setup" in command-line. The printer HP Color Laser Jet 1600 requires a plugin file to be installed. While setting up, it will ask for a plugin file to download and install. Please do so.
 3) Once setup is complete, check the ppd file in /etc/cups/pdd/ folder. It should have cupsfilter as hpcups or foomatic-rip-hplip.
 4) Try printing from any application. It should print.

 If it does't print (as ppd file may be wrong), go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. Type "hplip" and delete the existing packages. Download the latest hplip-3.11.5 and install it using "sh hplip-3.11.5". Follow the above mentioned steps from 1 to 4.
