hp-setup:

elk@elk-desktop:~$ hp-setup -i
......
Enter number 0...1 for connection type (q=quit, enter=usb*) ?
......
Using connection type: usb
......
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.

hp-check shows no error.

HPLIP version: 3.11.5
OS: Ubuntu 10.10

lsusb shows printer:
elk@elk-desktop:~$ lsusb
.....
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 03f0:092a Hewlett-Packard
.....

manually specifying printer address to the hp-setup starts installation, recognizes printer, downloads the plugin, installs and then, when trying to print test page:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_Professional_P1566?serial=000000000QB03350SI1c
error: Unable to print to printer. Please check device and try again.
error: Unable to communicate with printer HP_LaserJet_Professional_P1566. Please check the printer and try again.

What I have done wrong? What can I do to make printer work?

Of course.

elk@elk-desktop:~$ hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Delete the printer queue which is already added. Reboot the machine and the printer, try "hp-toolbox -g" in the command-line. while setting up, uncheck the option for Print test page. When printer becomes ready, try printing.

Let us know if you're still having problem in printing.

In short:

When I tried to search printers:

hp-toolbox(UI)[3445]: debug: Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)
error: No devices found on bus: usb

Then I added device by usb id. When I'm trying to print, nothing happens, job goes to the queue, and never completes.

Ok, I connected printer to the windows machine and disabled "Smart Install" feature.

After this printer works in linux as expected.

Is there a way to disable this feature from linux without using the windows machine?

David, this was some time ago, so I can't remember details, but as far as I can remember there was some tool on the CD which came with printer and there was big button "disable smart install" or something similar.

Hi David,

You need to disable the smart install feature on this device. To do this need to have a windows machine.

Steps to Disable Smart Install feature:
1. Connect the device using USB to a windows machine
2. Go to Utilities directory.
3. Run Smart Install.ext to Disable the Smart Install feature
4. Now try connecting to Linux machine. It should work fine. Please let me know if you need more help on this.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks and Regards,
