1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

The Problem

When I provide HPLIP setup with The Printer IP it detects the Printer ( network Printer Wired Ethernet connection)
I select the Printer then click next
The Next button changes to an add Printer Button I click the add printer button
Nothing Happens

I have managed to install the Printer through CUPS but would like to scan etc and find the HPLIP interface the best when it works.

Hi,

Open Suse11.4 is currently not supported by HPLIP. The same will be given in next HPLIP release.

Now please try the Auto Installation patch given at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+faq/1557

Thanks and Regards
Ani Balakrishnan

What does it mean "Open Suse11.4 is currently not supported by HPLIP"?

As far as I understand
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+faq/1557
this is only about installation of HPLIP.

But we (i.e. Novell/openSUSE) provide HPLIP in readymade RPMs
in all our products since a very long time so that our users
do not need to install HPLIP via any kind of "hplip-*.run" files.

Instead our users usually install HPLIP either via our
official RPMs which are provided with the openSUSE product
or via non-official RPMs which they could get from various
package repositories from openSUSE.org or from PackMan.

For example I provide the currently newest HPLIP 3.11.3a
via the "Printing" project in openSUSE.org
as non-official packages without official support
but nevertheless openSUSE 11.4 users can try it out.

Hi Johannes,

Please install all the missing dependencies listed down by the "hp-check -t" output and add user to "lp" and "sys" group.
Use hp-setup to setup your network printer.

Let us know on the same.

Thanks,
Goutam

Just need to Clarify a couple of things

1. HPLIP has been working on my PC in OpenSuse 11.4 since I installed OpenSuse 11.4 a week after it was released.
2. Up until I changed Printers HPLIP was working Fine.
3. My old printer, an HP Photosmart 6180 AIO died so I replaced it with a New Officejet 6500a E710n-z
4. I do not understand why I now need to install dependencies and add myself to security groups when it was working fine just the day before I replaced the Printer.
5. I have now updated the package to The package available from the OpenSuse Download page ver 3.11.3a
6. I have also inadvertently managed to get HPLIP working by adding the printers through the CUPS administrator page. NOTE: the Printer did not appear in HPLIP until I configured the Fax in CUPS.
7. I am still not sure that I have the full functionality of the Printer as I am not sure which Drivers should be loaded, there appears to be several for the Printer and the Fax, However I can print OK. and am not too bothered about the fax.
8. I have also noted the ADF does not work on the Printer when I scan - is there a particular driver for this to support the ADF while scanning or is this left out intentionally and will it be available in later versions?
9. I appreciate your efforts with HPLIP and your answers to my enquiries.

Kind regards to all

Goutam Korra Kodu,

why should I install something when I am not the one
who asked the initial question?

Why should someone who had HPLIP installed via RPMs
install any "COMPILE TIME ONLY dependency"?

Why should any user of HPLIP destroy the default system security
by adding normal users to system groups like "lp" and "sys"?
See what I wrote regarding the "potential security issue" in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/752608

James Morgan-de Laine,

regarding "fax", perhaps you have similar problems as
I described in "HP devices not detected as usual" at
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Printing
and in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/741073

But this is only a blind guess - your issues might have a
totally different root cause.
