ADF not available on Ubuntu 10.10 for Officejet 6500 e710n-z

I'm trying to scan using the Automatic Document Feeder using XSane, from Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat), using updated HPLIP drivers (v3.11.1). However, XSane doesn't offer the option to use the ADF as a scanning source. The printer is connected over the network and needless to say this works perfectly in windows.

Flatbed scanning works perfectly.

Using the batch scan option only causes repeat-scanning from the flatbed, same with scanimage --batch.

Everything else on the printer works fine.

Hi,

 Scan from ADF is currently not supported for HP OffceJet 6500_e710n-z. This is mentioned as a known issue for HPLIP-3.10.9 release. http://hplipopensource.com/node/346

We are planning to provide support for this in the next HPLIP release.

I would suggest that 'soon' expired a long time ago!

Please can you update us on the status of this HP-advertised feature which was clearly never working or tested by HP (on any Linux distro by the looks of it) ?

Yes, I just bought one of these to do loads of ADF scanning on maverick. This lack of resolution is pretty bad considering there is no mention of this in the printer tech specs or marketing which states 'full support' for this OS. Just having a well-hidden KB article is really not enough IMHO.

Update: I do now have ADF scanning mostly working in version 3.11.7 but not in the way documented by HP.

If I use xsane in multi-page while selecting the ADF scan source. You *Have* to se the number of pages because just hitting 'scan' again seesm to skip every other page!

Maybe you want to update your KB article to mention that it is partially working and how to use it.

I still cannot get batch mode working under the same version scanimage. It just scans using flatbed and then gets I/O error on the cmdline.
