HP Officejet 6500A (model E710a) won't scan from ADF

Asked by James Shriner

I am unable to scan from the ADF.

I have previously used Simple Scan and gscan2pdf for scanning documents. With my previous scanner, there was an option to scan from "flatbed" or "ADF". While I have not previously utilized XSane, as invoked by the HPLIP printer "scan" option, XSane defaults to a "flatbed" scan also. Why can't I select ADF as my source?

It appears the Officejet 6500A only provides for "flatbed" scanning; the ADF is not recognized, despite HP representation of full support for ADF document scanning. While the ADF is able to copy a multi-page document, it is not able to scan; the machine just "hangs". Single page scans from the flatbed are fine. However, inasmuch as I purchased the Officeject 6500A based on HP reputation for linux-compatibilty AND its 35 sheet ADF capacity, the lack of ADF scanning is a deal-breaking problem!

As additional background for troubleshooting, I have successfully installed the HP Officejet 6500A (model E710A) on my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. The HPLIP Status Service displays in the notification area, with appropriate Officejet Printer & Fax devices. Both devices also appear in my print manager. I am able to print to the device, although my intentions were to use it solely as a scanner. I haven't bothered with fax setup, as I don't care about that feature.

I have followed the hplip 3.11.3 download/installation/setup instructions to the letter. Everything appears to be working appropriately, except the only feature I care about...ADF scanning. If the ADF feature didn't work for COPYING, I'd think the ADF was faulty.

Have I missed something? I really like this machine and want to make it work. HP has a good reputation with the linux community for providing linux-compatible drivers, but this is my first HP purchase. Please show me that the linux community was correct to recommend HP as a hardware vendor! THANK YOU!

Also, HPLIP 3.11.3 was released today as an update of 3.11.1. While it is possible that the brand new version has issues, I'm noting that 3.11.1 had the same issues, which prompted me to download the new 3.11.3 version today. Same results, though...see above <sigh>

The ADF scanning for this printer is not supported even if so many people wants it.
The hplip team promised that it will be available in a future release. (I'm waiting for this feature too.)

You can scan ADF documents with the web interface, until hplip supports ADF scaning.

Thanks for the info Herc.

BTW, I figured out a "workaround" by inserting an SD card and ADF scanning to the memory card, which mounts on my desktop. Then I can cut/copy/paste to my desktop directory. Sorta cumbersome, but it works.

Then again, HP states this printer is "fully supported" with Linux drivers. I consider the lack of this feature a violation of that statement...FALSE ADVERTISING. Since I purchased the Officejet 6500A 2 days ago, I returned it and exchanged it for an Epson Workforce 630 all-in-one. Proprietary drivers were available from AVASYS. Works like a champ...with no hassle or fiddling whatsoever. Download the drivers, install the drivers, connect the all-in-one and EVERYTHING worked IMMEDIATELY. EXACTLY what I was looking for, at half the price of the Officejet 6500A.

Sorry HP, but I can't support a hardware vendor who doesn't offer EVERY available feature to the Linux user. I appreciate the effort HP makes, but they fell short on this one!

We are working for the ADF scan support in the device and ADF scan feature will be available soon. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Unfortunately I suffer from the same problem with my HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus.

I upgraded to hplip 3.11.5, and now the ADF scan works!
Also, the solution I found before that, is to scan directly from the ADF to an SD card, without using the computer at all.

I "solved" this issue many months ago by exchanging the HP for an Epson Workforce 630, which worked with Linux drivers for ADF scanning immediately out of the box.

HP is usually pretty good about accommodating Linux users, so I was very disappointed at the lack of ADF functionality when it was advertised as "fully featured" for Linux users. In fact, this proved to be false advertising, based on my experience.

However, I DO appreciate HP efforts to "fix" the issue and make it right, although I cannot state with certainty that it is indeed "fixed", as I did not keep the HP Officejet 6500A. If above posted replies are true, this issue appears to be SOLVED.

Since hplip 3.11.7 I can specify "hp-scan --adf" however the paper is rolling into the printer but I always got an error " SANE: Error during device I/O (code=9)". I don't get this error when I scan using the flatbed.

Definitely not solved. Whether I use xsane or simplescan as GUI or via the command line, the ADF gives the Error during device I/O. The only improvement from earlier versions is that I can select the ADF in the xsane GUI (previous versions only gave the flatbed), but it still does not work. The flatbed is no problem.

Please download hplip-3.11.10 from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and install it using "sh hplip-3.11.10.run" in commandline. Remove all existing queues and systray. Connect the printer and run "hp-setup". Once setup is done, run Xsane. You can scan from flatbed and ADF.

Let us know if you have any issue in scanning.
