Deskjet pro 8500 A910g incorrectly recognized at setup ? Workaround ?

Asked by Emmanuel Charpentier

I recently bought a HP Deskjet pro A910g an installed hplip (Debian wheezy package version 3.11.1-2). The setup was not immediately succesful, but after a false start (attempt to install it in the system-config-printer applet from the Gnome "Administratione menu via a JetDirect connection, then deleting theis queue) hp-toolbox detected it correctly and created a *print* device, recognized as "A910", neither "A910g" nor "A910a". The dialog box where one can name and describe the print device did *not* offer a fax device (the relevant fields were grayed out).

Early printing tests were correct (and impressive...modulo an issue with Acrobat Reader which seems unable to duplex print a "booklet" : the issue might be Acrobat's).

XSane also correctly saw a scan queue, and I have been able to scan from the flatbed scanner. I have been unable to scan from the ADF with Xsane ; however, ISTR that hp-scan *is* able to scan from the ADF (recto only, I understand that duplex scanning is not yet supported in hplip. Is this planned for a future release ?). Is that a bug or an Xsane limitation ? My perusal of the avaiolable mailing lists, newsgroups and fora left me undecided...

But my beef is with the fax : whereas I checked the fax connection (the fax test started from the printer's touchscreen is successful), no fax device nor fax queue was created. Of course, hp-fax does

I am sorely tempted to duplicate the printer gueue and replacing the "hp:" pseudo-protocol with "hpfax:" to work around this. Should this work ? Or will I mess my setup with no remedy ?

Last but not least : do you plan an hplip release adding this relatively new device ?

Sincerely,

A bit more perusal of the questions archive sugested to edit
the /usr/share/hplip/data/models file, where I found a susicious
"fax-type=0" line. I changed it to "fax-type=1" and re-detected my
printer. This time, the fax ability was detected and a fax queue was
created. Preleminary tests seemed OK.

Can someone comment on this ?

Could you fix this isue in a next release ?

Sincerely,

     Emmanuel Charpentier
