HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910a - ADF not recognised

Asked by johnherron

Hi, all.
Working on Linux Mint 9, installed the above all-in-one yesterday under hplip 3.11.1.

Cannot scan from the computer via ADF; the ADF is not being recognised, although the hplip compatibility table lists the device as fully supported.

However, the ADF *does* work when scanning documents from it to an 8 GB ubs stick plugged into the device's front ubs port.

gscan2pdf, the Gimp and xsane all recognise the all-in-one, but offer/allow only the Flatbed scan option.

What am I doing wrong or overlooking? or is the HP 8500 perhaps not fully supported after all?

Thanks for helping

Hi,

Scan from ADF is currently not supported for HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910a. This information is mentioned in known issues of HPLIP-3.10.9 release in which the device is supported. http://hplipopensource.com/node/346

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Thanks and Regards
Ani Balakrishnan

Thanks, Ani, for the information.

Do you suppose that -- or is there someplace where I might inquire whether - the ADF feature might be enabled at some future time (e.g. in a future release of HPLIP?).

If not, I might have to look around for a more compatible device, because I often need to scan voluminous documents or files.

We are working for the ADF scan support in the device and ADF scan feature will be available soon. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Thanks for contacting HPLIP.

Thank you, Yash, for the clarification.

You say the ADF scan feature will be available _soon_.
Can you give me an idea of what that is likely to mean in terms of weeks or months?

Sorry, i don't mean to put pressure om you or anyone.
But if the ADF feature's implementation should turn out to require more than, say, four to six weeks' waiting time, i will need to look around for a more readily compatible device to handle my scanning volume in the interim.

Again, thanks for helping, and best regards.

Have meanwhile upgraded hplip to 3.11.3a, but ADF still not being recognised.

Should I give up all expectations that this (for me vital) feature will ever become active?

TIA for any indications.

Hi.

Installed the last-available (current) version, hplip-3.11.5, a few days ago.

But the ADF is still not operable from my computer.

What am I (or what is my box, or system) doing wrong? or is there likely something amiss in the printer?

If you need any further info, i'll be happy to oblige.

Thanks even now for any advice.

Hi,

You can download the patches bb_ledm.c.patch and ledm.c.path from https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/819709.

Please integrate in your source code of hplip installed.

Go to the directory in commandline and run "make" and "sudo make install". You can scan afterwards from ADF.

 Thanks,
Sarbeswar Meher

Thank you, Sarbeswar.
So far I've downloaded the two patches from https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/819709.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a greenhorn.
Unable to "locate" any hplip source files on my box (Ubuntu 11.04).
I'm pasting a list of all 'hplip' files found by Krusader's 'Locate' function at "http://pastebin.com/i55F7p2p".

I need help to learn how to proceed from here.

TIA

Hi Johnherron,

Please download the hplip-3.11.7.run file from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html. Open commandline and go to the downloaded directory. Run "sh hplip-3.11.7.run" in the commandline. The hplip will be installed and it will create a directory there. Run "cd hplip-3.11.7". Go to the /scan/sane folder and integrate the above patches you have downloaded.

Again go back to the directory hplip-3.11.7 and run "make" and "sudo make install".

Remove all the existing queues. Connect the printer to the host and run "hp-setup". Once setup is done, you can scan using "Xsane" or "hp-scan" or "scanimage".

Hope this will solve your problem.

Thanks,
Sarbeswar Meher

Thanks for your kind explanations, Sarbeswar.

Just one quick question: should I first remove from my box the hplip-3.11.5 version that's currently installed there?

TIA

Hi, Sarbeswar.

After installing the new version (hplip-3.11.7, I find in (home/john/Downloads)/hplip-3.11.7/scan a (sub-)folder sane containing - among other items - two .c files that bear names identical to your two patches, i.e.
file:///home/john/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7/scan/sane/bb_ledm.c
file:///home/john/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7/scan/sane/ledm.c

Now that I have the /hplip-3.11.7/scan/sane folder, I should, if I understand you correctly, copy into it the patches
file:///home/john/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7/scan/sane/bb_ledm.c.patch
file:///home/john/Downloads/hplip-3.11.7/scan/sane/ledm.c.patch
and then re-install hplip-3.11.7.
Which is what I am now going to do.
Will keep you posted on the results...

Hello, Sarbeswar.

Scanning via ADF with gscan2pdf now worked fairly OK.
I'll need to test out alternate applications such as XSane or SimpleScan.

But at this point it would seem that the core problem (the ADF function) is solved.

Thanks again for your kind help.
