text does not print on officejet 4215 (Kubuntu 10.10)

Asked by N7DR

Following upgrade to 32-bit Kubuntu maverick (10.10), my HP Officejet 4215 does not print text. Graphics seem to print fine, and when told to print text the printer head moves, but nothing is actually printed.

There was one similar question in the database marked as "solved", but the "solution" turned out to be to switch to Windows.

The output of hpcheck -t is:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

How do I do that? As far as I know I have the latest Kubuntu packages -- dpkg isn't finding any updates. Is there some other place (other than the official Canonical repositories) whence I can install a more recent hplib package?
