installing linux-compatible OfficeJet 6000

Asked by mjdollard

Just received OJ 6000 printer after being assured by your staff that it was linux-compatible. Instructions are all for pc/mac requiring software for pc/mac only. I don't want to take it all apart if it isn't compatible. What are instructions for linux. i.e. just connect and let linx set it up? Get driver from sourceforge, install it, attach printer?

The how-to is based on your distribution.

Check your printer is supported or not:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html

First try:
1. Attach it to your computer
2. Try to run hp-setup

If it not works:
1. Download the last release of hplip:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html
2. Install it. (Set the setuid bit, and run it, from command line)
3. Attach your printer, and restart your computer
4. Run hp-setup

Notes:
Instead of running hp-setup gui, you can run hp-setup -i from command-line.
If it's still not working, and the printer is supported, ask again.
