hplip fails after upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10: /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed job-hold-until-specified

Asked by mcneillk

HPLIP systematically reports failure to print using HP Photosmart Premium over WiFi, after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. All print jobs (even 1-page text) now take up to 20 minutes to spit out. I have tried reinstalling by different means all of the most recent hplip packages. The problem persists.

The status from the queue is always "/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed" and "job-hold-until-specified".

The system log shows:

Solved by modifying the printer device URL hp:/net/Photosmart_Premium_C309g-m?zc=HPEAB866, replacing the printer name with its static IP address.

Probably could have solved the problem by using avahi-daemon to resolve printer's self-assigned DNS.

I believe that upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 caused avahi-daemon to be deconfigured.
