With Ubuntu 10.04 the printer HP Deskjet 500 no longer prints

Asked by Frielinghaus

After downloading the last 10.04 Ubuntu version I am trying already a month for getting my very old HP Deskjet 500 printer printing again. ( I have to copy all the files to be printed to my Windows XP OS which is still printing.) Now I am trying to install an older version of hplip which recognizes within its generated PPD file the parallel port of the printer. ( The actual PPD file says at hp-check -t: "ppbuild=no", "foomatic-ppd-install=no", "foomatic-rip-hplip-install=yes" and at "DISCOVERED USB DEVICES": "No devices found. "hp-setup" does unfortunately not help.
