Network scanning with HP Laserjet 4100mfp
I have recently bought a reconditioned HP Laserjet 4100mfp.
I can print over the network, and the scanner works if I use the native digital sending function on the unit itself (this sends the scan as an email attachment through an SMTP server you define in the printer config).
However, I was wondering if scanning could be controlled across the network using HPLIP?
The printer does appear as a scanner to the system. The output of scanimage -L is:
device `hpaio:
But any kind of attempt to communicate with the scanner fails with some kind of IO error. xsane, for example, outputs the following after scanning for devices:
Failed to open device `hpaio:
This page seems to suggest that this printer doesn't support the normal scanning protocols, and scanning via digital sending is my only option:

Can someone please confirm that I am correct on this, and that there is no way to scan from this printer under linux other than to use digital sending?
