Laserjet 4L not detected via parallel port on Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit

I can't get my Laserjet 4L to install using hp-setup on Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit.

I have installed all the prerequisites from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html and I have reinstalled the 'hplip' package and verified the 'ppdev' driver is loaded and in my BIOS the parallel port is set to ECP (actually EPP+ECP, but it's the only option with ECP in it) but I cannot get hp-setup or hp-probe to recognize my printer.

My system does not have hp-check, but here is the output of 'python check.py -t':
