Photosmart C4380 has no PPD in HPCUPS & won't print PDF in HPIJS

Asked by Matija “hook” Šuklje

Hullo,

for months now I've been having odd problems with my Photosmart C4380 (it used to work before on the same box).

From what I can guess is that HPCUPS doesn't include the PPD for this model and that (lately) the HPIJS driver for it got messed up ...either that or I'm an idiot.

When I try to use the HPCUPS driver, this is what I get:

When I try to use the HPIJS driver though, it does detect it, but I can print only from very few programs (e.g. Okular), while printing from most others or even just PDF via 'lp' doesn't work at all.

System:
Gentoo
CUPS 1.3.11
HPLIP 3.9.12 and 3.10.6 (tried both)

Any suggestions on how to solve this are more then welcome!

Cheers,
Matija

Please update cups from package manager.

if above didn't help you, then configure HPLIP with

./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-hpcups-ppd-install
make
make install (as root)

I have done that and do have USE="hpcups -hpijs" set in my Gentoo's '/etc/make.conf', which in turn sets just what you describe (enables hpcups, disables hpijs on compile). Also I have tried both the 3.9.12 and the 3.10.6 version.

That's the problem. It seems like hpcups doesn't include this driver for this device at all.

If I set USE="hpcups hpijs", which enables both, there is the hpijs present, but prints only from certain apps.

To prove what USE="hpcups" and USE="hpijs" do, here's the relevant part of the ebuild:
--8<---------------
 if use hpcups ; then
  drv_build="$(use_enable hpcups hpcups-install)"
  if use static-ppds ; then
   drv_build="${drv_build} --enable-cups-ppd-install"
   drv_build="${drv_build} --disable-cups-drv-install"
  else
   drv_build="${drv_build} --enable-cups-drv-install"
   drv_build="${drv_build} --disable-cups-ppd-install"
  fi
 else
  drv_build="--disable-hpcups-install --disable-cups-drv-install"
  drv_build="${drv_build} --disable-cups-ppd-install"
 fi

 if use hpijs ; then
  drv_build="${drv_build} $(use_enable hpijs hpijs-install)"
  if use static-ppds ; then
   drv_build="${drv_build} --enable-foomatic-ppd-install"
   drv_build="${drv_build} --disable-foomatic-drv-install"

After trying this and that I managed to get a slightly better picture — now HPLIP actually _finds_ a PPD for my printer and installs it, but I still can't print because CUPS reports "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster failed"

Here's the current output of 'hp-check':

I have exactly the same problem with Fedora 13 and a networked C7183 (C7100 series)
No update was available for Ghostscript.
CUPS was updated.
The two pages fax is sent out and delivered, unreadable except for the header readily defined when I had set up the AIO device.
Printing and scanning work fine.

Here is the hp-check log (options -rt)
Thanks in advance for your help.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine
if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built
HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and
run-time dependencies).

I'm not trying to flog a dead horse, but I still have the same problem... No printing, no scanning under HPCUPS.

At least in my case it seems the problem was that I used Zeroconf with HPLIP, but CUPS doesn't understand it (anymore).

I switched to SLP discovery so my printer is defined by its IP (in my case: hp:/net/Photosmart_C4380_series?ip=192.168.1.101) and it works now.

Avahi support is planned for CUPS 1.5, so I hope then we'll be able to use our HP printers over network again without any trouble :P

Another solution that made it work for me was to install Avahi with mDNSresponder-compat support and running the Avahi daemon.

Sorry for so much trouble :\
