Printers nor seen by 10.04 "failure to connect CUPS to server"

Asked by David

Printers are HPF4280 and HP 1213 connected via USB ports. Both worked with 9.10. Xsane recognises the 4280 but no printer is listed and on trying to reinstall get message "CUPS Server error""Failure to connect to server" I have tried installing CUPS fiies from Synaptic but no joy. Would totally uninstalling all CUPS related files and then reinstalling help?

try to execute the following command in the terminal:
# sudo service sups start

this will start your cups service, if it is already installed it should not be started. after executing this command try to reconfigure your printer. it should work now.

At first I thought it had not worked - especially when my sound went as well. But on rebooting everything was restored to normal.
Thanks
