HPLIP: not printing using HP c7180 Photosmart

Asked by Gary Mellor

Hi

I have two systems running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04). One is a 32-bit system and the other is a 64-bit. HPLIP on the 32-bit system works just fine but on the 64-bit system it simply does not print. My system can 'see' the printer and the printer status shows that the print job arrived in the queue but it never gets processed. It's very strange.

I wondered the other day whether I'd perhaps set it up inadvertently in 32-bit mode so I uninstalled and reinstalled and this time gave the following command:

./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --libdir=/usr/lib64 --prefix=/usr --enable-udev-acl-rules --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build

Note the --libdir=/usr/lib64 part. These were in the instructions I followed religiously from this location:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html

The printer never gives any error and just sits there but never processes anything on the queue. I'm almost tempted just to put the 32-bit OS on the 64-bit machine but I feel that would be defeatest and unhelpful to anyone else yet to discover this problem.

If anyone could shine any light on this I'd be really grateful.

My machines are as follows (both laptops):

Hewlett-Packard HP 510 (X86) - Mobile Intel® 915GM Express Chipset
Lenovo G550 2958F3G (X64) - Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset

If there is any more information I need to provide then please advise.

My email is mellor DOT gary AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk.

Regards

Gary.

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode

I have installed 32-bit Lucid (10.04) on my 64-bit machine and tried to print using this configuration to rule out my physical machine being the cause of this issue. Interestingly, I get the same result so it would appear this is machine-specific rather than 64-bit specific. For the record this is my machine info:

-------------------------------------
Lenovo G550 2958F3G (X64)
-------------------------------------

Chipset: Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce G105M
HDD: Western Digital Black SATA 320GB @ 7200rpm
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor (X9100 - 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 6M Cache)
RAM: Crucial 8GB SODIMM DDR3 (800MHz)
Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN [Shiloh]

This is also occurring on my new Sony Vaio Netbook (model: VPCM11M1E). Same story as before. Printer can be pinged, jobs join the queue but are never processed. If I turn my 32-bit system on at the same time as the Sony has a job queued the 32-bit system's job gets processed immediately but leaves the Sony job on the queue. No visible errors and no errors in the log. I would really appreciate some help with this as only having one laptop that can print is as inconvenient as it is baffling.

After many late nights/early mornings trying to resolve this I have now got this working across all my machines. I needed to move my router and various other networked items to my office (something I've been meaning to do for some time). When I configured it again I connected my printer to the router by ethernet rather than wirelessly. Bingo - all machines can now print to it. I have *no* idea why this made a difference but the fact I can now print makes it worthwhile. Whilst this is technically not a fix to the original issue (since it was setup wirlessly) I am happy to mark this as problem solved since I now have a workaround.
