Ubuntu 9.10 copying of 74GB Truecrypt encrypted file container to external drive (320GB) crashes at 42GB everytime!

 I'm trying to backup my Truecrypt encrypted file(74GB) to an external drive(320GB)- file copy crash @ 42GB. I've also tried to create the encrypted file container on the external drive, but that too fails at around halfway mark also. I've Googled everywhere but never any luck. Thanks from a noob.
