scan multipage document in doesn't save in PDF format

When using XSane to scan multiple pages into a single PDF document, it saves the pages into some sort of picture file, not into PDF. Or maybe there's something I'm not doing correctly.
I would also like to have the chance to enter a file name for the multipage document.

Using Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)
HPLIP 3.10.2
XSane 0.996

And the connected printer is an OfficeJet J4540 by usb. Wireless not an option with this printer.

And I'm also looking for the ability to crop to a portion of the full scan. Maybe there's something that I'm missing about this too.

Dale,

 xsane acts as a stand-alone program that saves acquired images in a suitable PNM format (PBM for black-and-white images, PGM for grayscale images, and PPM for color images) or converts the image to JPEG, PNG, PS or TIFF.

To save directly to a PDF document you should use the hp-scan utility:
