HP Officejet J3508 scanner is not detected in Linux

Asked by santam chakraborty

I am unable to scan with the HP Officejet J3508 Printer although printing works. Here is the relevant information:
1. Printer Model : HP Officejet J3508
2. Operating System : Open SUSE 11.2 / Ubuntu 10.04 (tried with both with same results)
3. HPLIP version : 3.9.8

The printer prints fine but scanner fails to work
Here are the relevant outputs

Above reads:
------------------------------------
hpofficejetj3500series

Device URI: usb://HP/Officejet%20J3500%20series?serial=CN02A5Z2SR052K
...
warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use
the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.
------------------------------------

The easiest way to get it "HPLIP installed" is
to remove the hpofficejetj3500series print queue
(e.g. as root run "lpadmin -x hpofficejetj3500series")
and then run as root HP's setup tool "hp-setup"
to re-setup it again now as "HPLIP installed".

In the end the crucial thing is that the "Device URI"
is "hp:/,,," so that the "hp" backend is used because
the generic CUPS "usb" backend does not provide the
necessary functionality for scanning.
You may have a look at
http://hplipopensource.com/node/128

Regarding CUPS backends in general have a look at
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:CUPS_in_a_Nutshell

I finally worked around the issue by accessing the scanning function from the windows xp installation in virtual box 3.1.6 (the binary version which has USB support). I still look forward to the resolution of the issue however and will be waiting eagerly for the fix.

Please attach your printer through USB. Run "lsusb" and find BUS and Devicd IDs.
Please run "hp-setup -g bus-id:device-id" and post the complete output.

Thanks!

error: No devices found on bus: usb

This is where a GUI I pooped up and showed that it was not able to detect the printer at all.

So I had the idea that maybe it was not FINDING it in the printer list. I opened the file /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat with gedit as super user "sudo gedit /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat". A quick search showed that there was no entry for an officejet 3500 series.
So I copied the information about the officejet 3600 series and pasted it again above the 3600 series.

The details I copied are as below (note i have changed all 3600 references here to 3500

During this process the printer was detected by the GUI and I was able to get to the next step where I could setup the fax number also. I have blanked out the fax number and my name in the output. At this time I was able to get the hp system tray icon activated showing the fax and printer being detected and installed successfully.

I was now able to scan a page successfully using xsane and the fax also got sent via the computer itself.

However the printer did not work.

As I am using Kubuntu so I went to system settings > Printer . I compared the ppd description of the old printer configuration tha was working with the new one that was not printing. The change was that the new printer configuration had selected the ppd for HPOfficejet j4500 instead of HPOfficejet j3600. Clicking on change and selecting the HPOfficejet j3600 as the make of the printer allowed me to use the ppd file for that itself. In addition to this I made another change in that changed the output mode to draft grayscale from color (as this is a black and white printer ). Voila all things work printer, scanner and fax.

For simplicity the simple way to do it is after installing hp-lip to change the file /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat file. Just copy the j3600 section and paste it again and replace all the parts where j36** printer comes with j35** .. for reference see below
