According to this:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_f2400_series.html
your printer is well supported, but it looks like version 3.9.10 of hplip is required. Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) comes with version 3.9.8.

Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04 which will be released next month) will have hplip version 3.10.2, so if you can wait for a bit and upgrade Ubuntu that might be the easiest and safest solution. There is also a Beta version of Lucid available now, but obviously that might have bugs that cause other problems for you.

Another possibility would be to install version 3.9.12 from the following unofficial and unsupported PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~solard3ity/+archive/official

I do not know solard3ity/Jason Scurtu. There is a small possibility that installing something from an unofficial PPA could break your system.

It is also possible to download the newest version of HPLIP from http://hplip.net/. I have not tried this myself.

So I think it's safest to wait until Lucid is released and then upgrade to that, but if you need it working now, maybe you could try one of the other options.
