Printer networking issues
I'm trying to get my HP wireless printer to work in wireless mode. Some data:
Printer model: HP Deskjet F4568
Distribution: Gentoo linux
Kernel: 2.6.31.6
hplip version: 3.9.12-r1
Here is what I got so far:
1. I compiled and installed hplip driver, I connected the printer via usb and printed a test page with no problems.
2. I ran hp-wificonfig which registered the printer on my home network.
3. I was able to go to the printers webpage at 192.168.1.64 and change some options.
4. When I do hp-probe -bnet it says:
Device URI Model Name
-----
hp:/net/
Found 1 printer(s) on the 'net' bus.
So far so good, but...
5. I then tried configuring the printer using hp-setup but it doesn't see the wireless printer. In the 'step 1' of the wizard, under 'connection I/O type' the only active button is the usb, the others are greyed.
6. I searched on these forums and tried the alternative way, that is to run hp-makeuri 192.168.1.64, but the output was:
error: Device not found
7. I copied the hp:/ address obtained from step 4 to cups configuration and installed as a new printer, apparentently successfully. However, it always fails when something is sent to the queue (even the test page) with:
"/usr/libexec/
Some more info that may help:
I do not have snmtp installed since the gentoo installer of hplip says that it now uses zeroconf instead. I have zeroconf working:
avahi-browse -a
+ wlan0 IPv6 Home Printer via wireless @ wagner Internet Printer local
+ wlan0 IPv6 Deskjet_F4500 @ wagner Internet Printer local
+ wlan0 IPv4 Postscript Printer @ wagner Internet Printer local
+ wlan0 IPv4 Home Printer via wireless @ wagner Internet Printer local

+ wlan0 IPv4 Deskjet F4500 series [8E858C] Web Site local
+ wlan0 IPv4 Deskjet F4500 series [8E858C] PDL Printer local
...
I disabled my router firewall and tried to see if it was blocking anything, but it doesn't seem so. I do not have any firewall running on my laptop.
I searched google and these forums, I hope I didn't miss anything obvious...
Thanks!
Marco
