hplip 3.9.12 automatic installer not working on Mint 8 main

Asked by blah

I run Linux Mint 8 main and a HP F2480 all-in-one printer. From other posts elsewhere I've managed to get the printer printing by telling Mint it's a HP F735 but I have no scanner under this workaround. I have downloaded hplip 3.9.12 (the RUN file) and tried to install it but it gets stuck here:

INSTALL MISSING REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES
-------------------------------------
warning: There are 7 missing REQUIRED dependencies.
note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection.
warning: Missing REQUIRED dependency: gcc (gcc - GNU Project C and C++ Compiler)
warning: This installer cannot install 'gcc' for your distro/OS and/or version.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency. Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.

The installer did correctly identify my OS, distro and version. I checked - as far as I can tell these dependencies are satisfied.

I'd like to get all of my printer and scanner working. help please.

We are not supporting auto installer for Mint 8.
please follow the manual instructions at
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linuxmint.html

you can do the same from hplip-3.9.12 directory, which is created by hplip-3.9.12.run file

please add user to lp group after installation and restart your PC.

Thank you for supporting HPLIP,

Thanks. I still get stuck though - at step 5, after entering the command "make", I get the message "make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop."

Are you able to install all dependency packages mentioned in step 2?
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linuxmint.html

if you miss any thing please let us know.

please remove, if you give any spaces in hplip directory.

I can't find libcupsys2, cupsddk-drivers, libcupsys2-dev in Synaptic. I guess that means they are not installed and not in my repositories either.

I don't understand your second comment: "please remove, if you give any spaces in hplip directory."

Thanks
Fossie

second statement to say, please remove white space character if any in hplip directory path
Ex. if hplip-3.10.2 path is /home/hplip/installer/hp lip
then rename directory as /home/hplip/installer/hplip

Thanks,

Thanks. There are no white spaces in the folder name. I managed to get versions of those 3 missing packages but could only install one of them libcupsys2. For the other two, when trying to install the debs I get this error:

Error: Breaks exisiting package 'cups'

What should I do now? I tried to do the "make" again but I got the same error.

Package names often gets changed with new version of linux distro. It seems the case for Mint 8.

Currently , we have instructions only for older versions of Mint. I'll try to get you the instruction set for Mint 8 and upload to our site.

Appreciate your patience!

Thanks,

A

Hello,

Mint 8 is based on Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic koala).

It has following hplip packages pre-installed. This you can see by launching Menu\Package Manager.

hplip :(Version 3.9.8-1ubuntu2)
hplip-data :(Version 3.9.8-1ubuntu2)
hpijs :(Version 3.9.8-1ubuntu2)

If you want to use GUI you need to install below package from the package manager.
hplip-gui

After this you can use utilities like hp-setup (adding your printer) , hp-toolbox (setting printer preferences etc..)

Check for your printer model if its minimum supported version is less than 3.9.8. Below link can help you out.
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/combined.html

For users, whose printer models supported minimum hplip version is more than 3.9.8, they need to manually install the latest package from our site. Instructions are same as of Ubuntu 9.10. Below is the link:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html

I've checked it out and it works for me. Please let me know if it solves your issue.

Thanks,

A
