Uninstall after automatic install

Asked by forthurst

My printer the Photosmart C5380 was not listed as supported by SANE with the version of HPLIP (2.8.6-b4) in my Debian (x64) 5.0.4 distro so I attempted to automatically install the latest HPLIP (3.9.12). After several attempts to feed the installer the dependencies based upon error messages that incorrectly named missing procedures I got to the HP-Setup step. The HP-Setup step never worked automatically but I was able to input the USB channel manually to the Device Discovery to complete the install. However as soon as I tried to print I got CUPS error foomatic-rip-hplip missing. As the SANE procedure could not find the scanner either, I had a totally non-functional multi-functional device. As the printer had worked satisfactorily beforehand, I therefore want to unistall HPLIP (3.9.12) but the uninstall instructions refer to the manual installation tarball, so how do I remove it?
