There was a problem processing documen 'xxx' (job # x)

Asked by kako13

Hi,

I can't print anything. I'm getting a Windows that says "There was a problem processing document 'xxx' (job # x)". Also, after a few minutes the printer release a page that says "Unable to open the initial device, quitting".

It was working before but suddenly stops from working. I'm running Ubunu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

I tried running the automatic installer over the already installed HPLIP but without any luck.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

From log , printer model seems to be referring older (3.9.8) and new (3.9.12) ppds. Please remove all the printer queues (http://localhost:631). Add the printer again using hp-setup command.

Hope, this solves your issue.

Thanks,

A

Hi,

The problem seems to be that Ubuntu 9.10 installed by default the packages hplip-data 3.9.8-1ubuntu2. This was conflicting with hplip-3.9.12.run. Now problem solved.

Thanks.

Hi

I am getting the same error, but I am using HPLIP 3.10.2 and the PPD Description is HP Deskjet 990c hpijs, 3.10.2, so not the same conflicts as you guys discussed.

I am suing Ubuntu 10.04 too. Can anyone help me resolve? I have pasted my full story along with hp-check output at the Ubuntu Forums here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9233312&posted=1#post9233312

It's OK - just after posting that I found this : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/foomatic-filters/+bug/321164

The post by Till Kamppeter resolved my problem when I chose a different (the CUPS one) setting for my HP Deskjet printer. There were 3, so I chose the one other than the one already selected, and it worked :

Start system-config-printer, right-click the icon for your Brother printer and choose "Copy" to make a copy of your print queue, Enter a new name, like for example the old name with "-debug" at the end. Then right-click the original print queue icon again and choose "Properties". You should be in the "Settings" section of the properties dialog. There click the "Change" button in the "Make and Model" line. After loading the driver list system-config-printer lets you choose manufacturer, model, and driver. Go with the default settings by simply clicking "Forward" several times and "Apply" in the end. This should update your PPD. Try to print. It should work now.
