.xhb is not a valid HomeBank file

Asked by Todd Conrow

I've been using HomeBank for 7 years now and never had any issues. My operating system is Windows 10 pro. I last opened it on 4/5/2025 with no issues. When I opened it today, 4/15/2025, I'm now getting a file error, "The file 'JointChecking.xhb' is not a valid HomeBank file." I've never received this error before. I checked help for info about this error and the only answer was to make sure you are using the newest version. I checked and I'm using the latest version 5.9.0. I tried downloading the previous version 5.8.6 and that doesn't seem to help either. Any other suggestions on how I might be able to salvage my data?

Hi Todd,

You get 'The file 'xxxx' is not a valid HomeBank file.' when homebank fails to recognize the header.

Can you open your xhb file with a text editor and post the first lines (until you get <homebank v=xxx.xx.> ?

An actual valid 5.9 file header is:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<homebank v="1.6000000000000001" d="050900">

Thanks for the reply Maxime. Looks like I have bigger issues. I opened the xhb file with notepad and it is blank. Not sure how the file would have been corrupted. Unfortunately, I didn't back it up either. I think I'm sunk at this point and just have to start over. Thanks again.
