Correct way to update/upgrade HomeBank?

Asked by Horus

Hello everyone,

I'm a new user of HomeBank and have a basic but essential question:
I see that HomeBank is still a traditional software installed through a setup file instead of through the Microsoft Store. As a result, is there a best, aka correct, way to update or upgrade HomeBank from version A to version B?

I mean, for traditional software installed through a setup file, there seem to be three approaches to upgrade/update the software, but there is no consensus:

A. Uninstall the current version, eventually reboot the computer, and then install the new version.

B. Do NOT uninstall the current one. Instead, run the setup file which will replace the current version with the newer one. If the current version is uninstalled, some user configurations or data will be lost.

C. Does not care. Either approach A or B is fine.

I've looked through the FAQ without finding my answer. Could someone please add this information to the FAQ?

Thank you! 😊

Hey,

First, drivers and many other comes from a setup file, not the microsoft store which have a lots of cons by the way.

I would answer not only for HomeBank but as a general approach to install/update software from a setup file in Windows.
None of your A and B are fully correct.

For A. reboot is not necessary, if it was, the setup file would require it (if there was a service or system dependent to update)
For B. rare software remove personal data such as configuration, and other files, again if the setup file is well made it will ask for this before doing it.

Guidance:
- for HomeBank and generally, you can run the setup again to update
- but some prefer to uninstall first, sometimes the setup detect a previous installation and uninstall first for you

when you install over, the only side effect it that it may left residual files behind if you uninstall it
for example if v4.0 introduce a file A but do not distribute a file B, B will remain after uninstall

but usually everything will works fine in both scenario
at least for HomeBank.

Can you help with this problem?
