Import TRNTYPE CREDIT with negative number shows positive in import

Asked by EarloftheWest

In my downloaded QFX file, it has the following...
<TRNTYPE>CREDIT</TRNTYPE><DTPOSTED>20231101123813</DTPOSTED><TRNAMT>-100.00</TRNAMT>
Notice that the TRNTYPE is credit but the value is negative. (Notice the minus sign before the 100.00)
This is showing up as an increase in my balance rather than a decrease. We're expecting a decrease.

Is my bank creating the QFX file incorrectly or is HomeBank importing the value incorrectly?

Thanks!

The discrepancy you're noticing in your QFX file, where a transaction marked as "CREDIT" has a negative amount (-100.00), leading to an increase rather than a decrease in your balance, could potentially be due to either the way the bank is creating the QFX file or how HomeBank is importing it. Let's break down the possibilities:

Bank's QFX File Format: Normally, in banking terms, a "CREDIT" transaction means an increase in your account balance. However, the negative value (-100.00) typically represents a deduction from the account. This is a bit unusual as we would expect a credit transaction to have a positive amount. It's possible that your bank's system is using a unique convention for representing transactions in the QFX file. It would be a good idea to confirm with your bank how they format credit and debit transactions in their QFX exports.

HomeBank's Importing Mechanism: The issue might also lie in how HomeBank interprets the data from the QFX file. HomeBank might be reading the "CREDIT" tag correctly but getting confused by the negative amount, leading to an incorrect reflection in your account balance. It's worth checking if there are any settings or updates in HomeBank that might address this issue.

Standard QFX File Formatting: In standard QFX formatting, a credit transaction should increase your balance and would typically be shown with a positive amount. A debit transaction, which decreases your balance, would usually have a negative amount. The format in your file is unconventional, combining a credit type with a negative amount.

Resolution Steps:

Verify with Bank: Contact your bank to understand their method of encoding transactions in QFX files. Specifically, ask about the negative amount in a credit transaction.
Check HomeBank Settings: Review HomeBank's import settings or documentation to see if there's a way to correctly interpret such transactions.
Software Update/Support: Ensure you're using the latest version of HomeBank. If the issue persists, consider reaching out to HomeBank's support for assistance.
