Assignment matching multiple words

Asked by Joe Mann

Hi,
I have tried a few options to fix the following issue and looked in the documentation to no avail, so was wondering if you could help.

I have various transactions that have similar wording in the memo field, but each needs to be assigned to it's own category.
e.g
Complex
Complex Levy
Complex Salary

So I want to do the assignment on the whole string, but all three transaction are assigned the category for "Complex"

many Thanks
Joe

PS> Just to clarify this problem occurs when I am importing a .csv file and using auto assignments

Just wondering as there have been questions answered, that were raised after this one, if I should raise it as a wish.
I would suggest that the easiest solution would be to use quotes (") to enclose the full sting e.g. "Complex Levy"

regards

Peter

I do not have any knowledge about homebank and I do not know whether it works here, but in some other programs the following solves your problem:

Re-order the categories for assignments with the specific ones first:

Complex Levy
Complex Salary
Complex

If this does not work either, then that will probably require a program change.

Does re-ordering the categories have any effect?

Would it not be possible for you to modify your .csv file before you import it? I think that CTRL-H will call up a "Find and Replace" menu in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc, and with that you could change all instances of Complex Salary to just Salary (or Complex-Salary), and all instances of Complex Levy to just Levy (or Complex-Levy). I hope that will work for you. Good luck!

Hi Stan, thanks for the suggestion I will try the option of inserting a "-" between the words.

Hi Joe,

I see that a new Homebank version 5.5.3 was released yesterday. Among the bugfixes was this:

bugfix: #1930924 import back a csv reads categories as tags

I don't know if that would solve your import issue, but it might be worth taking a look. If not, I hope that hyphenating your categories provided a usable workaround.

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan,
Sorry for delay in trying your suggestion but finally got round to it and unfortunately the hyphenating option does not work, they still all get allocated to the "Complex" category.

Will try the latest release shortly and let you know what happens.

Hi Stan,
Have tried the latest release and am afraid that transactions that have either FERNACRES, Fernacres-Levy or FERNACRES-SALARY in the memo field all get allocated to Refund Reconciliation. Whereas I need the following allocations.

Memo Field Category
FERNACRES Refund Reconciliation
Fernacres-Levy Bills:Home-owner's Dues
FERNACRES-SALARY Wage & Salary:Net Pay

So guess I will have to raise it as a development request

thanks
Joe

Have you tried changing the assignment rules and modifying the csv file to have

Memo Field Category
FERNACRES-Refund Refund Reconciliation
Fernacres-Levy Bills:Home-owner's Dues
FERNACRES-SALARY Wage & Salary:Net Pay

to create different categories that do not match each other.

Can you help with this problem?
