Store the backup in the same folder than the xhb file

Asked by Cockenpot Jean-Marc

Hello,

I am using a dropbox to store the xhb file.
The absolute storage path for the xhb file depends on the machine (on which I logon) and its operating system (Ubuntu, Windows).

Is it possible to configure HB to store the backup file (s) in a directory visible to each machine. One possible solution would be to store the .bak file at the same location as the .xhb: is it possible ?
Another solution would be to configure a relative path (~/Dropbox/FolderName).

Thanks for your help.

Both .xhb and .bak can be stored together or separately. See Edit > Preferences > Folders to configure.

I might suggest that you use HomeBank in Windows as your primary copy and store your files there, inside your configured Dropbox folder (making Dropbox backup automatic). Then configure HB in Ubuntu to point to the Windows Dropbox folder too. This means you will always be working on the same .xhb file, and its .bak files will be stored with it. I don't use Windows, but as a test I set HB in Linux to store backups on a FAT32 USB flash drive, and it is able to do that, so it should be able to store on your Windows partition from Ubuntu.

Caution: Windows 8 and 10 do not shut down the computer when you tell it to shutdown. Instead, Windows "hibernates" and this prevents Linux from accessing the Windows filesystem, or only allows read-only mode. You can easily disable hibernation following Microsoft instructions here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-client/deployment/disable-and-re-enable-hibernation

I hope that helps. Good luck!
