Just opened my file to find out that all previous transactions for 2 accounts(60 days worth) is completely gone.

I have backups but not sure how to restore, and not sure why I lost all of the transactions.

Starting 5.2, use the restore backup menu.
Prior that version, if you have some manual backup open it as usual file once it is a .xhb file (not xhb~) which is a backup, in that case, copy to new name (without ~) first.
