Do you mean floppy disk or compact disc? Floppy disks are much too small to back up anything that can recover an Ubuntu system. Floppy disks aren't use to restore modern Microsoft Windows systems either; they are just too small capacity wise.

I use sbackup (You can install it in Synaptic) which is easy to use and creates archives (like zip; but in a format called .tar.gz) which you can then burn to a disc. Much easier is to get yourself a good USB, Firewire or eSATA external disk drive which you can plug in to your computer and it will take all your back-ups.

Hope this helps!
