Linux mint; old version not updated via ppa

I have 4.5.5 on mint17.3. but cannot get the latest version to use a file created in windows 7, version 5.
The Linux ppa is not updating so I am unable to use this file [version 5.0.8].
Is there a way to update to version 5.0.8?

Since 5.0.5 HB requires GTK+ > 3.12 so it will not build on too old distros.
You can try upgrade your GTK and then build from source code:
