Data Backup

Asked by Geoff

I'm a newby to HomeBank and am disturbed to find that there isn't any facility within the program to make a backup of the data, it seems to rely on an export of a QIF file.
I tried this a few times but the program crashed every time regardless of the settings used.
HELP!

It doesn't need a backup facility. Your accounts are held in the
filename you selected. If you want to back it up, just copy that file
somewhere safe

I couldn't disagree more, EVERY financial program I have ever used has had a backup facility.
Financial data is very important and can cause considerable distress and problems if it's lost through a disk failure or other problem.
I suspect that some users may not be familiar with copying files so it's only common sense to help the user protect their data.
What you are advocating, copying the file manually oneself, is a step backwards.

So let me get this straight, instead of having a user right click on
the file, click copy and then click paste where they want the file
backed up, you want a feature that does this for you?

In it's very basic form, yes. It'd be even better if it was zipped thereby saving space by about 90% for a HomeBank file.
As said, some users won't be that 'computer literate' or be scared to go beyond what a program offers.

If this is implemented, I would also like to see, say, 3 successive backups kept before the first is overwritten.
The makings are already there in the Save as window in the file menu, a little rejigging of the screen to give a selection of file type and some additional code to handle it should suffice.
There would also need to be a Restore function.

To me, backuping should not be managed by individual programs. There is plenty of solution to manage this globally on a computer.
In case of a disk crash, no one will be afraid to lose its financial file, but also all the others, isn't it?

It's the same for file safety or encryption, lot's of solution exists, and google is full of tutorials on how to achieve these 2 essential step when using a computer and care about its personal datas, of any kind.

Anyway, i'm not sure but maybe a wish is opened for this feature to be added, just check and feel free to add this.
Anyway, there is so much essential things to be done before this.

Having set up Homebank on a new computer - Windows 10 - I am unable to save the data and I get a large error message.
How do I correct/locate the proper location for the .xhb and .xhb~ files

Can you help with this problem?
