What URL do I use for Facebook?

Asked by firefeather

I went through the authorization process for my Facebook account, and I think it's working. However, the Accounts menu still says "None (facebook)", and the Account Information dialog has no Feed URL listed for Facebook. Do I need to fill it in with something? Where do I find the information I need to put in?

Part of the reason why I ask this question is that I believe (but may be mistaken) that I should see my friend's status updates in the main Gwibber window once I get this URL put in correctly.

When you look at your status updates page (by clicking 'see all') you should see a page which has a RSS feed in the URL bar of Firefox, indicated by an orange radiating signal type icon. Click on that orange small icon and you are presented with a new page. Copy and paste the whole URL for that page in to Gwibber and it should show updates of your friends in facebook.

If you use another browser other than Firefox, I'm not sure how you would find the feed - refer to your browser's documentation on that.

I just ended up going to the friends link (top menu bar), and then in the left navigation there's a Friend's Status Feed which you can copy and paste the url for.

Hope this helps other people out.

Thanks for the app!

Presuming there is no way of getting this RSS link via the API, this should ideally be documented alongside the entry field.

Does this apply to an old version of FB? I can't find an RSS link anywhere on Facebook. Not for my profile, and not for my News Feed. I'd really like to be able to follow my friends status updates in Gwibber.

Click on Friends at the very top menu on Facebook. Then on the left hand side there is a Subscribe heading with "Friends' status feed" under it. That's the link you want.

Thanks, Joshua. I was looking in all the wrong places.

Yup I can confirm that. No friends feed anymore, but I saw some content on Artechnica about a new API for facebook and the gwibber implementation:

http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/04/how-to-using-the-new-facebook-stream-api-in-a-desktop-app.ars

Maybe we need to use something like that

Quoting from that article:

"The full source code of the Gwibber microblogging client is available from the project's version control system, which is hosted by Launchpad. I've committed the new Facebook stream features to the template-facebook-stream branch, and the contents of the branch are roughly at a beta level of quality, but the limits imposed by Facebook on who can apply the new extended permissions for streams generally preclude widespread testing at this point."

So we need to wait, or compile ourself, to have facebook support working in facebook again
